Sorry for the crappy audio/visual but I used my digital camera and it's all I have.

Back story. Did the front 60K and she fired right up but noticed this sound only louder. Thought I might over tightened the tensioner against the timing belt. I so loosened it up a little. The timing belt is still snug but not as tight as it was previously.

The noise in the vid isn't as loud as it was before I loosened the timing belt tensioner a little.

Please help. I'm sort of at a lost. Before I did the 60K, she didn't make this sound.

Are you talking about the whining or the clicking?

The ticking almost sounds like a valve or lifter. Can the tensioner go a bit more loose? If it cleared up a bit when you loosened it, maybe a little looser will clear it up.

The whine almost sounds like the power steering pump or another accessory on the belt. When it's running, open the power steering reservoir and look in there. If there are Air Bubbles in the fluid, or it's low, it'll make that noise.

And just as an FYI, tensioner is spelled right. Firefox doesn't have it in its dictionary.

If it is the PS pump, why would it make this sound now and not before I did the 60K? Not saying you're wrong, but I don't understand why it didn't make this sound before and now it does. That's all.

Thanks for the advice.

Anyone else have any ideas?:munch:

The only thing I can figure is that the belt is too tight, and it's yanking on the power steering pulley too hard. If that's the case and you get ut too redline, you could potentially yank the pulley right out of the pump.
See if you can go any looser with the belt, making ot loose enough to make the noise go away, but tight enough so it doesn't slip.
Also, a failsafe way to know it's a belt accessory or the engine would be take the belt off, and start it. You won't have an alternator , so you'll be running off the battery, but tyat way you'll know

Timing belt is too tight.

That's what I've been thinking as well. Is it OK to have slack in the timing belt between the cam gears? I originally tightened the timing belt tensioner thinking that more is better. Today I loosened the tensioner bolt and let it just push up against the timing belt.

When I did that, I saw a lot of slack on the timing belt between the 2 cam sprockets. I would saw about 1/2 to MAYBE 3/4 of slack. I tightened the tensioner against timing belt just enough to take the slack out....then I tightened the bolt.

The vid is after I did this...

My old '92 made that sound until it broke this.... fan belt tensioner for the wp/ps.

Make sure the timing belt is on right. I had that same sound when I forgot to put the retaining washer on the crank. The timing belt was moving away from the engine and grinding the timing belt covers.

I'll give this a try when I get home tonight. I don't want to have to deal with that crank bolt again. That thing gave me issues since the beginning of all this.

I don't know, I was thinking of that noise and where I heard it before. Last time I heard it was on an older engine. Sorry

Whoa, that timing belt is waaaaaaaaaaaay tight.

Definitely loosen it a scosche.

How much, if any, slack should be in the timing belt? If I loosen the belt up anymore there is a ton of slack in the belt between the 2 cam gears....

Crank the engine with the crank bolt until there is no slack on the front 2 legs of the belt. The crank will turn, then the front cam sprocket, then the rear cam sprocket. Once the rear cam sprocket starts to move, hold the engine in place and:

Take up remaining slack in rear of belt with the tensioner...but don't shove the tensioner against the belt, just take up the slack. Tighten tensioner nut. Check for slop, repeat if needed.

The goal is not to apply tension (strangly enough) it's to remove slack from all 3 legs of the belt.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll give this a shot. I'm really hoping it's just the tensioner being too tight... I really do not want to have to take of the crank bolt, crank pulley, etc.

If you want, when you are done retensioning the belt, fire it up with no accy belts for a few seconds and make sure there's

A. no "flapping"
B. no "whining"
