Those were tinted a little too dark. I put 3 coats on them and should have stopped at 2. They can tint the clear any shade you want. I would start with 30 grams of black for 1 pint of clear thats what I use now and 2 coats work great.

"i suggest to get that headlight restoration kit because if the light aint really really clear it wont look good."

I use some polishing compound and a buffer to keep my lights crystal clear.
Are the "eyebrow" parts of the clear part painted on the outside or inside?

No, I meant when you did this mod, did you paint the "eyebrow/flutted" part on the outside of the clear housing or the inside?

well when i did mine i painted the housings also so they looked black when the hood was open so i made sure i painted the back side.. but i painted the front and once that was done i put the sealer for the head light over the whole deal once i sanded it all. the sealer is suppose to fill in scratches of 2000grit sand paper. so thats what i used

The factory silver paint on the eye brows is on the inside.

That is what I am talking about, on the pictured modded ones it looks like the black that covers the "eyebrow/flutted" area is on the outside of the clear cover.

Anyway, I was going to try this mod but my lights must be different because mine don't just unbolt and come apart. There are (4) 7mm bolts on the back that connect the black and gray sections together, remove those and there is what looks to be ****** shaped black plastic melted/fused into the gray part right beside the 7mm bolt holes. I would guess that to do this mod you would just need to remove the clear cover part right? I see 2 small nut like fasteners on the top of the light and a clip like fastener at the bottom that has melted/fused gray plastic on it and it looks like the clear part is sealed or glued to the gray part.
Does this sound like what you saw when you took your apart???

You can paint the silver fluted part without taking the lights apart. The inside of the lights, the housings, must be taken apart to be painted, obviously.

Yeah, I only wanted to paint the inside of the housings like that on a '99.

I see now that I am looking at the posted pictures backwards. When looking at the first few pics, you are looking from the back, (like you are the light bulb), and it is the clear part that is masked off. You didn't have to remove the clear part, just remove the reflector part and tape off the clear inside. Duhhhhh I am a little slow sometimes but I get it now.

yea remove the 4 7mm screws tape the lens from the inside. and then prep and spray. let it dry (i did 3 coats) put it together and install. very simple.. but dont for get to plug the head lights back in i did that and the next morning i went to work and had no head lights good thing the 1 can be reached but the other plug got tucked under the housing and i had to remove it again. crappy but lesson learned! :salute:

I did this mod the other day. I used a small drill bit and drilled out the plastic ******* that are beside the 7mm screws, stuck a long narrow punch into the holes and tapped the two peices apart. I masked off the inside of the clear lens with masking tape and sprayed a nice even coat of primer followed by 2 to 3 coats of Krylon satin black. After I carefully removed the tape, I put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and cleaned the inside of the lens to make sure that no tape residue was left and made sure that the whole thing was dry before re-assembly. I like the finished look of this mod and being that my car is black, it looks like the light housings are actually part of the body of the car. Kinda reminds me of the series 1 Jaguar E-Type lights and how the light was set back in a cove and was covered.

Pics of Headlight Mod

HeadLights043 HeadLights039 HeadLights041 HeadLights040 HeadLights042 HeadLights038 HeadLights037 HeadLights036 HeadLights035 HeadLights034

It was overcast today so these pictures are somewhat dark but you get the idea. The oil stains in the parking spot are not from my car by the way, and you can see the steepness of the transition from the short driveway to the carport. I put my air dam back on and it scrapes alot but oh well, it is lawn edging.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me that much, I just wanted the insides to be black. However, I just picked up 2 cans of Nite Shades and some clear coat for the tails and markers. I may have to look at masking off the headlight lens and spraying the eyebrow and edges with Nite shades.

To paint insides of headlights you need to preheat the oven to 200 and bake the lights for 20 minutes to loosen the silicone, 350 is too high for any amount of time and may melt stuff. Then when you peel them apart remove all your bulbs and adjusters and paint what you want. You dont need to sand or primer anything inside of the lamp just clean it up with some alcohol or soapy water etc and make sure its super clean. Regular rattle can ultra flat works good like Krylon etc. I didnt do this on a SHO so im not familiar on how they come apart but the technique should work on basically anything. Be prepared to spend a lot of time doing this. I did a set of bugeye WRX headlights and it took about 6 hours start to finish. (Lights had to be baked separately and i put about 8 coats of paint on) Also when putting the lights back together, do not use new silicone, preheat the oven back to 200, and then press the lights back together as far as they will go and bake them again. As soon as you pull them out finish pressing them back together and make sure all tabs etc. are snapped in. Hope this helps
