Well, my P/S pump decided to explode on me during my 30 mile trip back home from a job site today. I figured it was gonna happen soon as the damn thing sounded like someone lit the fuse on its tampon. I found some really good step by step procedures on how to replace it. But I am curious if anyone has some helpful tips that would make this replacement go faster. Special tools needed? elbow attachments? Jack hammer and TNT?

What problems have you all encountered during a P/S pump replacement?

EDIT: The closest P/S pump is 4 days away in Denver, CO. :suicide:

Just my luck... I give my second car to my mother to use and leave myself with only the SHO and it ****** leaves me stranded.

LJRuddy's SHO problems list as of today:
blown P/S pump
crank cancer
wobbly crank pulley
front main leak as if the seal isnt even there
bad rear motor mount
broken tie rod
alignment issues
bald tires
sticky rear caliper that wont unstick even after new brake lines and caliper were installed
y pipe is leaking again; stripped stud... AGAIN
broken antenna mast = no radio stations
ninja coolant leak that i cant locate

this list is growing literally overnight! :oogle: WTF is going on?

Holy **** dude. I remember when you got that car and I thought wow that's a nice SHO! When it rains, it pours with these cars. At least you have a good mechanical ability and can work on it yourself.

You can do tons of work and maintenance on these cars, but I still don't trust them. That's why I'll only keep one as a toy and drive about 2k miles a year LOCALLY with it. I don't get too far from the house fearing something will leave me on the side of the road.

EDIT: OH S***! You got a lemon buy-back. Ouch!

When I worked at Jag, this lady had an 04 XJ and it came in 6 or more times with a coolant leak. The end result wound up tearing down the motor trying to track stuff down and doing all kinds of other tests. I don't think she yet qualified for buy-back; I have no idea why! She said to **** with it and traded it in after having it 1.5 years and 15k miles...bought it for 65 and got about 25-30 trade-in. She traded it in on a QX56.

The PS pump is really not that bad to swap on an MTX. I have done a few. I would recommend you get a good used one from a local SHO person, or I could send you one, but it would still be about th 4 Days quoted. The thing to watch out for is the small white teflon o-ring on the PS line. It is a one time use gasket. New ones come on new hose sets, or you might get a new gasket from Ford. You need to gently stretch it so you can get it over the threads, then wait for it to relax back into the groove.

Sorry to hear about your string of car trouble.

So you are saying that I need to buy a set of HP lines as well to get this gasket?

How much do they usually go for from Ford?

The local Napa has those Teflon line seals. Otherswise, if you buy the line from AZ they come with the seals.

Tiny arms come in handy, so your in luck!

**** 2 birds with one stone, do the rear mount while your in there i believe you have to loosen it or remove it anyway to make the PS pump easier to get at. Atleast thats what i did on my MTX

On a side note im waiting for the P/S in my gf's ATX to finally eat it, that pump is whining so bad I can hear her coming from a few blocks away LOL I just pretend its a supercharger when i get on it.

Welp, I got the P/S pump out... Only took me 4 hours. Suffered only 1 casualty this time. I put a nice 1cm long gouge in my pointer finger that went straight to the bone. :nut: The bearings on the pump were melted/missing.

like **** you do.

jack the car up and pull the passenger front wheel
loosen the pump pulley bolt
loosen the serpentine belt tensioner
remove belt and pulley
remove pressure line
loosen front bolts
unhook and relocate all sorts of electical connections out of the way so you can see the ps pump
loosen and remove rear bolt
remove front bolts
drain ps reservoir
remove reservoir to pump line from pump
remove feed line from reservoir
reverse to install

It's possible to pull the rear bolt without the use of an assload of extensions. I did it with either a ratchet or a combination wrench.

how the **** did you manage to cut yourself?

Wow, what a PITA. Maybe that's why mechanics all tell us to go to **** when we've attempted to take our car to them to get work done. I guess that's why we all have to learn to do stuff ourselves. I never understood it. The SHO is a transverse V6 like any other car out there. All newer cars are a PITA. I just never knew what made this one an extra special PITA but I do know it is one.

My p/s pump is whining and it's leaking fluid somewhere. I'm not screwing with it.

I don't know how long it took me to do mine. I didn't bother timing myself. I spent a couple hours trying to salvage the pressure line from the pump but it was rounded too much so i said **** it and cut it with a sawzall. My hood was off at the time so I had the room to maneuver the *****.

I had most of it back together in one evening though.

I was taking the rear bolt off. I have pinched nerves in my shoulders that cause my arms/hands to go completely numb after holding them above my head for longer than 10 seconds. Well, I was in a bad mood and I was fighting my numbness trying to break the bolt over. The socket slipped off the bolt and my finger got smashed between the edge of the subframe and the 1/2 ratchet.

Luckily, since my arms/hands were completely numb then this happened, I didn't notice what I had done at first. It wasnt until blood started dripping on my face that I saw what had happened.

...Umm you own a SHO:evilgrin:
I forget who said it back when I joined the forum, but they said "welcome to the money pit club"

I can honestly say that my SHO has been one of the most reliable vehicles I've ever owned. I've had it for just over 2 years and have put about 60k on it in that time and the only major problem I've had is when my girlfriend decided to jump a curb in it

I've found that taking the intake off decreases the time to do anything with the p/s pump or pressure line. Once the intake is off, you can reach the pressure line easy as well as the back bolts for the pump.
