starting to rewrite a list i had for a turbo ls1 project so that it applies more to the SHO, but this is a pretty good start so you can see what kind of stuff you need on your project.the idea being its always the little stuff that runs a project into the red. ill add more to the list as i think of it

tubing: figure out your needed sizes and how many bends it will take

y pipe should be 2" before and 2.5" after the y
waste gate recirc is 1.5 or 2"
intercooler pipe is usualy 2.5
exhaust after the turbo is 2.5 or 3"

example: said:
304 stainless:
(1) 2" 180 degree
(3) 2.5" 180 degree
(3) 3" 180 degree

mild steel:
(2) 2" 180 degree
(2) 3.5" 180 degree

exhaust & turbo
  • manifold flex pipes
  • NBO2 bungs
  • WB02 bung
  • Turbo
  • turbo flanges
  • hotpipe transition - fits a round pipe to the square ****** of the turbine side inlet
  • oil lines and fittings (as follows)
T block to screw into the block (one outlet for the stock sensor, one for the turbo supply)
hose .... plenty of frickin oil hose
    barb fittings
oil pan fitting (bulkhead style or screw in)
  • Wastegate
  • Wastegate ******'s
  • wastegate gaskets
  • wastegate flexpipe (not applicable for open dump)
  • turbo heat shield (stainless steel cooking pots work good)
  • heat wrap & clamps for it - at least 2 clamps / section wrapped
  • ****** to mate your downpipe to whatever exhaust is on the car

Intake:
  • filter
  • does your filter require a reduce to fit onto your intake pipe? (ie:4" filter on a 2.5 pipe)
  • BOV - recirculated ? add tubing to the above section if so
  • Intercooler
  • tbolts or hose clamps
  • Boost Controller - optional
  • IAT sensor bung

couplers:
  • filter pipe to turbo
  • turbo to charge pipe
  • charge pipe to intercooler
  • intercooler to charge pipe
  • charge pipe to maf - reducer style
  • maf to charge pipe - reducer style
  • charge pipe to throttle body
  • couplers for anyplace you decide to split your pipes for ease of install / removal

Fuel / tuning
  • fuel pump
  • in tank filter "sock" for the bottom of the pump
  • external filter - youll be pushing way more fuel, you need a new filter to make sure you get it all
  • injectors
  • injector o rings / spacers if required
  • tuning software
  • fuel pressure regulator (if not a kit, see list below )

FPR parts list:
  • FPR
  • banjo fitting & bolt for fuel rail
  • in & out fittings on FPR
  • plugs for unused FPR ports
  • stock fuel return line spring lock coupler + adapters it may require
  • fuel pressure gauge
  • high pressure fuel line - can be bought after you mount everything else, allowing you to measure your exact needs

engine & tranny parts:
  • electric oil pump - scavenge pump for low mounted turbos
  • engine oil cooler - optional
  • tranny oil cooler (atx cars)
  • oil pump lines -
  • oil pump wiring / switch / relay
  • oil catch can & fittings - optional
  • serpentine belt - if deleating a/c
  • upgraded engine mounts - optional but very good idea to combat wheel hop

vacuum system:
  • distribution block
  • vac line the proper size for the following parts:
    BOV
    FPR
    waste gate
    brake booster port
    boost controller
    crank case vent
catch can (if you install one)

coolant system: for water cooler turbos
  • coolant hose - TB bypass size
  • Brake lines - 2 pcs, long enough to go from TB to turbo
  • banjo or barb fitting that fit turbo in and out
  • coolant hose to connect said fittings to said brake lines
  • hose clamps for each connection

gauges:
  • wideband
  • boost
  • oil pressure
  • tranny temp
  • engine oil temp
  • fuel - mech on fpr
  • gauge pod
  • wiring (pos, neg, + multiple colors for signal wires)

Steel stock
  • turbo mount - angle iron
  • intercooler mount
  • intercooler shroud - if your so inclinded to make one
  • piping brackets

Bolts:
  • manifold -> y pipe
  • Y pipe -> turbo
  • turbo -> dump tube
  • wastegate
  • turbo support bolts
  • piping mounts
  • intercooler mounts

Random Supplies & Gaskets:
  • Coolant
  • oil & filter
  • RVT gasket maker
  • loctite
  • Copper antiseize - COAT EVERY SINGLE BOLT !!!

Well, I say copper as its just better stuff any way you look at it. Its a few bucks more, but for what its worth.. can be a LOT. Changing a y pipe can take 5 minuites, or it can take an hour or so.. if you have to remove the manifolds. Longer if you don't have the nice extentions, and an air ratchet that will fit up in there.

$5 well spent IMO

Wow that's just about everything in my room! :nut:

And I've got my gauges mounted already. WB02, Vac/boost, Oil temp, Oil Pressure, Water temp, volts. I don't really see the need for a tranny temp gauge unless you have a quaife. But OTOH, the more info the better.

Ah,well yeah if that's the case. But you'd have to be a retard to turbo and ATX.......

turbo an ATX, then youll know why its on the list, lol

For the MTX guys, just add the cost of 2-3 spare trannys :nut:.

Skimming past that list made me a little sick thinking about how much I've spent and plan to spend vs. how much I thought I'd get away with spending.

Sorry for the jack, but its turbo related.

How much more power you think you'll make before its overkill i.e. not going to the ground anymore?

Seems to me 350whp ish is where its at before you go from usable power to look at that taurus spin!

yep !

i originaly made the list so that a friend with a 98 pontiac formula could start picking up parts for a turbo build, he showed me builds he would like to replicate ad gave me a hp goal

i had a spreadsheet at one point that went with said list, and had plugged in cost of all parts, along with details about where to get the items at the best price

he flipped when the total for a rock solid turbo kit came out to 4500

he asked if we could turbo his car for like $2000 somehow ....

It's all good and nice when it's one complete setup in the car, but boy does it suck to look at all the work ahead. Just having parts isn't all of the work, it's fitting them in and making them work. I remember when my room was full of parts... Lots of work ahead!

Yeah, I know. Im waiting to get my hands on my new DD to put the car down to tear it down.

I know I could pull it off in a weekend, but if I hit a snag somewhere, I'd rather have the back-up.

Yea its fun having turbo and intercooler sitting in your room but its much better when you turn the key for the first time and hear it running.:)
