Has anyone on here used this tire (Yokohama YK520's)? I have read some reviews of them on different websites, seems like it is a good tire for the money.

What did you think of them?

I have Kuhmo Solus KR21 (I think that's what they are). Anyway, I was considering replacing them, I don't get real good traction in the rain or initially on take offs, it is always chirping.

Well, anyway, someone decided it would be cool to stab my front left tire. I have PBR brakes and had to put the rear tire on the front, spare on the back. 2nd time I have had a flat on the front and had to change tires that way. I was able to get another slicer, the plan now is to have a full size spare.

Right now, Yokohama has a $40 instant rebate when you buy a set of their tires. Plus, Discount tire will give me $25 a tire for my used ones, I will keep one of those 3 for the full size spare. So, like 90 bucks off, plus I get the replacement cost of a new Kuhmo tire at about $130 once things are processed as charges will be pressed against that person.

They are an "upgrade" to the 420s.

A "good tire for the money" for a minivan or Prius. I wouldn't even store a set in the same garage as a SHO or any other performance car.

Spend a few more $$$ for REAL tires. IMO, not a place to scrimp for both better handling and braking performance.

Thanks, nice to know that now. There is a set now on my car. This SHO is my DD. I needed a set that would be good in wet and dry weather.

WHAT ARE REAL TIRES?

They feel a lot more stickier to the road then what I had. In reality, a tire for the "minivan" or prius.

I have the 520's on my volvo. Put about 10k on them so far, and no complaints. They are wearing nicely, and still look damn near new.

This is the problem with the tires.

NO tire should give you a "complaint". And "wearing nicely" is damning by faint praise.....but they are on a Volvo.

OK, I think we need to start from Ground Zero.

What do you expect from a set of tires?? What will you compromise on?

FWIW, I think that someone should put together a Sticky Topic with this kind of thought process to determine what people should get for tires, as there's a lot of misconception and downright stupidity when buying tires.

One example is a guy wanting to spend big $$$ on brakes, then cheap out on tires. A hint: better tires will make you stock brakes "work" better!! In fact, about all stopping test in car mags are good/bad because of the tire on the car.

Well, i really cant say much as far as performance cause the cars are very different, so it wouldnt matter anyways. But, they do hold corners well, and are great in the rain. But there again, the volvo is awd, so it doesnt say much for how the sho would do with them.

Boat, I'd look into the 'new' Goodyear Eagle GTs. everyone that I know that has them likes them, and they seem to do well in the winter as well as summer.

I'm going to suggest the Bridgestone RE760 Sports. They have the highest reviews on tire-racks test and among the reader reviews. They don't cost a fortune, grip well and are not a noisy tire. I have those solus tires on my truck.... I would not dream putting them on one of my SHO's.

To restate post 2, the tires were on my car before I got that first response from Ron. A sticky would be awesome for tires. I did do some research on here, but it seemed like what I read about some of the various tires in that thread , frankly they weren't all that great, not on all of them, but some of them. At the time of purchase, they showed me it (yokohama) was one of the best rated tires that they had. And while I can't really at this point afford 2 sets of tires, this was my choice.

I don't really know what is out there to say what I am willing to "compromise" on, and haven't been in the SHO long enough to have tried many different tires. I HATE the Kuhmo's, and won't run those again, went with those at the time b/c it was what I could afford. I opted for an all season H-rated 60k mile tire, where the reviews I read were ALL good. Granted on different cars, but hey, it was what I had to go from.

Ron, why don't you do a "sticky"? You seem to know quite a bit about tires.

I am intrigued about the Eagle GT's, but it would be for a summer only set IF I could afford it.

I have contacted the place where I bought the tires. Sounds like they are willing to do an exchange. I was now thinking of up sizing to 225/55/16 Continental ExtremeContact DWS. They are a little more $$, and there are 2 guys I know of on here that have them, SHO SPD, and 97vortechsho on gen 2's. They seem to like them.

We have this tire on Ashley's SHO. I would never buy it again. They are EXTREMELY noisy.

-Sam

The S-drives are honestly not that bad. And Tire Rack did warn both in their review and in consumer reviews that one complaint was the road noise. I generally like them but if noise is something that's particularly important to you it probably WOULD be better not to get them.

They have been wearing well, barring any mention of some alignment/suspension issues on the car itself.

Tire noise is comparable to brake dust/noise IMO. If the product WORKS, who cares??

That depends on what noise they're making! But yeah, like I said it's a personal preference I think. I don't find the noise too annoying.

Some people have wheel issues though and excessive brake dust would probably drive them insane. :angelnot:

Yep. Those are the folks that spend $1,500 for brakes with pricey slotted/grooved/drilled rotors to "look cool", then buy some $50 "ceramiic" cheapie pads for no dust, and buy $50 a/s tires at Wal-Mart. Yep....there's a bunch of you SHO folks out there like this!!
