Just wondering does the Rear Air button bring up the outside temp when you hook it up on our older controlers?

Yes, it displays the outside temp, but the display says Rear Fan Off, just like the button. IMHO, it's not much of an issue. It's very difficult to find a unit like this with all of the exact same buttons. I've been able to get some green that are exact, but Blue has been hard. My blue one says Outside Temp, but my PNL/FLR button says Norm. I still love the unit though.

I may put this one on ebay, or I may put it in my 90. Haven't decided yet.

drdave thanks soooo much for posting this info. I plan to use it to modify my 2 other ETAC's I have so that the newer plates mount up.

well seeing how this it the thread all about ppl making thier EATC's work with other faces and what not, how about anyone out there having a face from a blue unit that has a perfect MAX A/C and Floor/Def buttons?

I have reinforced my 94's buttons but those 2 had hairline cracks in them that weren't visible till I filled them with epoxy.

I'd like to find those 2 perfect buttons to make my 94 unit be perfect at night.

Once you modify a new unit for you car, you won't want to sit in front of an OEM unit ever again, even if it's mint. I just sold a 2001 unit that was exactly like our OEM units, brand new condition. I put it in my 93 and drove around with it for a few days to test. It worked perfectly, and I hated it. I couldn't wait to get baby back in. The unit from MarkVII and Crown Vics add a look of class to our cars, and they look like they belong.

If anybody cares, I'm working on two easier ways to modify these units, currently in the testing stages with great results, and should be posting a modification for the 90-92 units soon.

BTW, I do want the antenna Bruce. Check you mail.

I just want to give credit to Ohioshodude for even giving me the idea of performing this mod. I think it's great how several of us have approached this "modification" at different angles, yet achieved the same end result. The only reason I even did this was b/c SHOTYME95 gave me an updated unit for FREE. Sitting on my ass and looking through the archives literally got the ball rolling. Another fine example of how innovation and ingenuity get put to work for the SHO community. Here's a refresher...

SloSho, why don't you add to this thread and explain in detail your mod. The mechanical modification that you did may be easier for a lot of people than the electrical mod. Remember, I didn't post this for the props. I posted this to help people, and because nobody ever publicly posted any procedure for modifying different units.

I only approached it electronically because no matter how I looked at it, I couldn't get everything to fit by changing the faceplate.

Ya know, this is kind of funny. You only did it because of Ohioshodude, and I only did it because of you!

I work for an electronics company and im sure i can borrow a de soldering tool after hours, but im not good enough to map out the wires myself. I've never been in the dash of a Gen III, so I couldn't say. I thought that the EATC in the Gen III was completely physically different.

Yeah it is. I have a gen 3 with auto a/c and I am hellbent on using an aftermarket cd player in the factory location, so I thought it might be possible to make up a face plate and use one of those EATC's.

Circuit City has sold a "dash kit" for the Gen 3 since 6 months after the model year was introduced. The problem with the factory Ford "radio" is that the tuner and amp are in the trunk under the carpet behind the driver's wheel well. You have to buy a harness to run all the way from the back to the front, as well as a plastic piece that has a DIN provision as well as climate control provisions.

There is no "dash kit" for a gen 3 with automatic climate controls. I neglected to mention the auto climate controls because I figure since all SHO's came with them it would be assumed.

As for the wiring harness, why would you need one? Chances are you don't want to use the stock 24 gauge wiring anyway. It is much, much easier to run new wire to each speaker. Right now I've got 16 gauge speaker cable on all four speakers. Why run the wiring all the way to the back and then back to the front again? The stock RCU is useless, dump it.

Sorry man, didn't know any 3rd gens came with an EATC. You could try to have one made from fiberglass. It would probably run you around $100 installed and painted.

I could make one, but I was thinking of just getting the Scosche kit for the gen 3 SLO and cutting the rotary controls out, making a hole for the EATC. I have just acquired both an 89 and 90 SHO EATC so I'm going to try this out when I get them in a month or so (picking them up at a meet).

Here's the answer to your question. The fan speed control header on the board uses 5 wires: three for the potentiometer (variable resistor), and two are for the light. 12 in the two ribbon cables, the 2 for the lights, and the 5 for the speed control. That's 19

DrDave, if you can tell me a 12-wire way to mod a new face onto my EATC, my visor will be getting a hard button EATC. I don't plan on putting the fan speed control in the visor; there's not enough room for wires in the factory hinge.

OK Quad, I'll try to post it this weekend since I want to see you visor EATC. BTW, two of the twelve wires in the two ribbon cables are also for the lights. This mod would have been a major pain if we didn't have the redundant 12V for illumination. Why not use a Gen II core? The additional wires are small and should not be an issue.
