The last couple of days, I have heard a weird tapping type of sound from my engine right after startup. I start the car, let it run for 30 seconds and when I'm driving the tapping continues for approx 3 minutes... Then it mysteriously disappears. Is this normal behavior for a SHO with 118,500 miles?

Anyone else had a similar experience with their SHO

It could be from an inadequate oil pump that could be going out causing it to take longer to build up the oil pressure to flow oil through your engine, causing some tapping either from the top of the engine---the valves; or from the bottom---the rod bearings?? shrug

It appears to be coming from the upper drivers side of the engine... I put 2 cans of CD2 oil detergent in the crankcase to clean my oil passages about 2000 miles ago. Maybe this has something to do with it?? Maybe it made the oil too light?? I'm not sure.

Does CD2 have insurance?
Ummm... Are you implying that CD2 is actually damaging the engine oh_my

By the way... I got the VERY first puff of blue smoke from the tailpipes on a startup yesterday.

I may go and have my oil changed tomorrow if this stuff is hurting the hammer cuss

Umm, i wasn't aware cd2 made a product you actually drive around with in. I would rush as fast as you can and get some good oil in there and add nothing. I suggest Valvoline MaxLife. Or, Castrol GTX as many have good luck with it here.

I agree. Get that out of there! Personally, I would NEVER use an oil treatment. Hopefully it's still okay. Best of luck! :)

NEVER add anything to your oil. As in owners manuals it states that, simply because when you add crap to it, it affects with the oil and it's lubing abilities being it can wear parts in your engine as it's probaly doing to yours now. The only oil additive that's safe from what I've researched, is Slick 50 when using Quaker State oil. Other than that, that's why oil companies make high milage engine oil that is blended to work and operate correctly and **** correctly. Once again, never add oil additives. thumb

That does it... It's oil change time for the SHO today!! I'm going with the castrol "GTX" 10w-40. I hope this solves my problem, and the hammer is not hurt.

Thanks for everyone's advice... I appreciate the concerns thumb

I wouldn't worry too much about it. CD-2 Detergent is not a flush, designed to be put in for 5-10 minutes then drained, but is actually designed to be put in the oil and driven, as witness by it's breakout:

Ingredients from MSDS / Label
Chemical CAS No / Unique ID Percent

Hydrotreated petroleum oil 064742-58-1
Residual oils, petroleum solvent dewaxed 064742-62-7

~ the contents is mostly treated oils:

(58-1)
"A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by treating a spent **** oil with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. It consists predominantly of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly in the range of C15 through C5O"

(62-7)
"A complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by removal of long, branched chain hydrocarbons from a residual oil by solvent crystallization. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly greater than C25 and boiling above approximately 400 degrees C (752 degrees F)."

However, it is still true that any given engine was designed to have a specific weight oil in it, and any additives change the performance of the oil. With this in mind, I'd give no more than 500 miles to any oil detergent that is designed to stay in the oil before draining and refilling with clean oil ONLY.

ISSUE:
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade for servicing any Ford gasoline-powered vehicle regardless of model year.

ACTION:
When servicing any Ford gasoline-powered vehicle, use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oil. Refer to the following text for further details.

Both SAE 10W-30 and SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oils have been recommended in the past depending on vehicle model and model year.

Tests have proven SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oil provides the optimum protection and benefits for Ford gasoline engines. At both high and low ambient temperature conditions, SAE 5W-30 provides the best overall protection. It allows faster starts under cold ambient temperatures.

SAE 5W-30 also provides approximately 1/2% increase in fuel economy over SAE 10W-30.

SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade motor oils certified for gasoline engines by the American Petroleum Institute (API) should be used for all service procedures requiring replacement of the motor oil.

Please note: A TSB in 2002 superceded many of these listings, but not the SHO.

ISSUE:
Ford Motor Company now recommends SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade for servicing most gasoline and flexible fueled vehicles.

ACTION:
All 2001 and 2002 vehicles where SAE 5W-20 is specified should be serviced at the recommended oil change intervals using SAE 5W-20. This oil is an improved formulation to improve fuel economy. Testing has validated this viscosity grade can be used in many previous model year vehicles. It is recommended ALL vehicles on the following Vehicle Application Listing be service with SAE 5W-20.

All 2001-2002 vehicles other than those listed in the "Exception 2001 Vehicles" or "Exception 2002 Vehicles" chart are being filled with SAE 5W-20 motor oil at the factory and should also be serviced with SAE 5W-20 oil.
