When I took my y-pipe off a few weeks ago to do my rod bearings, I snapped one of the manifold/y-pipe studs off. I drilled it out, but was a little off center. So when I retapped the hole, it was a little sloppy. So when I put the nut on it and started tightening it, rather than stopping when the threads were bottomed, the stud kept screwing into the manifold hole instead of the nut spinning on the stud. So, rather than cranking it down to spec, I left it kinda loose.

Now I have a bit of an exhaust leak. I guess the proper way to fix this would be to remove the pipe again, drill out the manifold hole and install a helicoil. But, I'm a lazy sumbitch and don't wanna do that. Would smearing a little jb weld on the stud threads work? I guess I could also put a nut on the back of the stud where it pokes through the manifold ******.

Err, if you dont want to do it yourself, take it somewhere and have it done. Shouldn't be too expensive. Personally I would get it fixed right.

Pete -
The exhaust manifold studs have a neck ****** on them that's supposed to bottom out. If you've bottomed it out & it's still spinning, it's stripped. If you haven't bottomed it out, do so.

If you've really mucked it up, look for a replacement manifold from someone, or get in there with a metal dowel welded in there & re-drill & tap. This is obviously a high heat area, and unless you want to drive around like you are, I'd say fix it right.

FWIW, I broke off 1 stud & backed the other one out of the manifold when removing the Y-pipe for my engine swap this month. I looked at them all, & decided to remove all the studs & start fresh while I was in there. Ended up having to break them off & drill tap the 3 that hadn't backed out.

Best of luck!

BTDT. I also replaced all of mine. The next owner will thank me - lots of anti-seize in there now.

I hope it's not in the rear manifold. I believe you have to remove the head to get that manifold off. The front one is cake.

Fred,

Yes, it did keep going past the threads. It is gone far enough past that I think I'm just gonna put a nut on the back side of the manifold ****** and tighten it down. That should hold it.

And yes Auto, it's the rear. No way in **** am I gonna pull the head though.
