There really isn't much more that can be said about the EGR cleaning.. get a few cans of B-12 Chemtool or brake cleaner, a straightened piece of coathanger or solid core wire, the required tools to remove the intake and then the access port hex nuts.

Once you remove the egr valve and then remove the intake, flip it upside down. Unscrew the hex head caps that block access to the EGR tube. They intersect each other at the back where the EGR attaches to the intake. After that, soak the crap out of that area with the cleaner and start poking the wire into the holes to drive out all the carbon buildup. After you get all the crap out of the tube, you can optionally disassemble and clean each piece internally if you want to. I just cleaned the excess hunks of carbon out so they didn't fall into the engine and got as much black out of the inside as I could.

It took me about 2 hours because not only was it my first time taking the intake off but it was pretty much my first major fix on my car when I did it.

Tip to get working on your car sooner if the engine is hot: get a $20 box fan from Walmart or whatever and stick it on top of the intake for 45 minutes... always gives a cold engine after that.. way quicker than letting it cool down by itself.

You don't even need to take the Intake off. Just remove the throttle body the nostrils(4 ports), which are what get cloged are, are easily accessible. Use a dental pick, scribe, or any small stiff wire and pisk the carbon out. once you pick it out you can spray some Berrymans B-12 down each nostril and let it soak. Then place a rag under the big allen plug on the back lower intake and remove the plug and let the crap drain out.

I suppose that way is good too but to really get down in there (and I had to REALLY jab the coathanger in there along with various screwdrivers and other pointed things) taking the intake off was the best way for me.

OK, I'm still confused. & I agree with the vageness of the shotimes article. I removed my throttle body this past weekend to check out the nostrils. But where are the nostrils? are they the little 1-2mm holes in the throttle body casting on either side of the butterfly valve or are they in the manifold? If so I didn't see any holes in there. My holes in the throttle body seemed clean. Should I pull the hoses that attach underneath it to check them as well?
Thanks for any help.

Nope. They are just a 1-2" inside of were the throttle body connects to the intake (in the intake man). There are two on top and two on bottom. When they are plugged they kinda blend in and are hard to notice. On a previous post in the past couple of days someone posted pics. I think it was Mikeys_Taurus.

Yep.. when you look straight in through the TB opening you should see where the intake branches off to the left and right. A vertical ridge will be in the middle and each hole is on either side of the ridge. Like naval said, the gunk that plugs them up makes them somewhat invisible. On mine, the gunk sort of sprouted out so they were sort of easy to see.

That flying saucer thing is your EGR near the drivers back of the intake. Before you do anything else, look down the intake tube if it looks anything like this:

It needs cleaned out really bad and that should solve your problem (The bottom two black spots should be holes resembling the top two.)

e-mail me if you have any other questions, I would recomend just pulling the whole intake off and give it a good cleaning. (mine really needed it only after 20k mi.)

I also forgot to mention, the bottom two holes go to the EGR, the top two go to the IAB (Idle Air Bipass)

Thanks guys that's the best description I've read to date on the location of the infamous "nostrils". I think when you've done something you make a lot of assuptions and certian key deatils get left out when describing it to someone else who's never done it before.
Thanks again!
