My car is now 250 miles from home...I went up to Athens Pa for a funeral and got all the way back to Williamsport and stopped at a gas station for bathroom breaks...Went back to start it up and it wouldnt start....in fact it wouldnt even turn over! The locks i went to lock and they lock and then unlock without me hitting anything! We tried to boost it because we thought maybe the battery was dead because I left the lights on.,...NOPE! Under the hood you can hear the starter clicking but not turning over! We tried rocking it back and forth trying to free up the starter if it was seized up....Nothing! Then i had it towed to a Ford garage because were thinking realistically and we have no idea what to do....we tried everything we could think of! NOTHING!! Cost 40 to have it towed and thatrs were it sits....I went back home and now have to call the Ford Garage 1st thing in the morning.....ANY HELP AS TO WHAT IS WRONG IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Also I had my Ford Reader and had NO idea where to hook the damn thing up at...said to look for eec or somethign on the plugs.....so that did a whole lot of nothing too!!!

Well the OBD-II diagnostic port is on the driverside dash, under the steering wheel. Have the shop test your battery and your alternator

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to clear the PCM and see if that makes any difference. If the starter is still clicking, try putting a long screwdriver or a prybar on it and whacking it with a hammer numerous times as someone tries to crank it.

It could be a number of things, but if this "Ford shop" thought your test connector was under the hood, I stronly suggest bringing the car elsewhere if you can't get it going on your own.

Is it the relays or the starter you hear clicking? Because mine was dead like that too, and there was clicking. First I thought it was starter, but found out it was relays. It turn out the problem was corrosed wire going to the starter, not sure which one. But try wiggling them.

starters typically don't go out without warning, mine cranked really sloy for 2 years then finally didn't have the sack to turn the engine over anymore. yes I have a 94 but the starter situation remains simaliar through many years.

But starters do go without warning.

The starter has gone on my SHO twice. Once with plenty of warning that there was a "dead spot" and the other time it rained. It seized. Period. No warning. Even after I freed up the solenoid, it wouldn't crank properly.

We have plenty of cars that come in to the garage where the starter has died without warning. I'm not saying it's common, but it does happen.

If you have to hit the starter, you must replace it. The starter is actually a pretty fragile part on an automobile. If it has seized in any way, hitting it MAY start the car, but it will not fix the starter. It's a telltale sign of a bad starter. Replace it before you get stranded.

And last: Ford EEC-IV is located on the passenger side of the firewall under the hood. Ford EEC-IV has not been used since 1995. EEC-IV is ODB-I. Your '96 SHO has ODB-II.

ALL ODB-II diagnostic ports are located on the driver's side under the dash, close to the door. While kneeling, the port is usually visible at eye level, even if it has a small vanity cover. Your ODB-II diagnostic port would not have told you that your starter was shot.
