Well, its an issue with the fuell pump or related circitry. THe code is a 542; fuel pump secondary circut failure, EAC to ground? What exactly does this mean?

The car started at first, then I stalled it and it wouldn't restart. I noticed that when the key is turned on the fuel pump was not priming. Then I checked the codes and this is what I got. Is the pump toast or is it an electrical short / fuse or something?

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe the ATX is setup completly different but I had a similar problem and thankfully an easy solution. The fuel pump would not prime and I was getting the same code as you IIRC. The cause of the problem was the coolant level sender in the overflow bottle. It had shorted internally blowing the mini 10a ignition fuse in the power distribution box which would knock out the spark AND prevent the fuel pump from priming. I simply disconnected the sensor and replaced the fuse; that did it. If anything, I would definitly check that fuse. I replaced it a few times without disconnecting the sensor and did the same as what happened to your car. It would start, run for a few seconds, then die.

1992 Fuel pump circuit

The MTX does not share this affliction with the ATX regarding the coolant sensor.

Since the fuel pump is NOT priming and you have a 542, you have a failure of the IRCM to supply power to the pump, most likely.

Check IRCM pin 5 when the pump SHOULD be running (ground FP pin of VIP self test connector), it should measure battery voltage. If it does not, check the COOLING FAN fuse. It also supplies the fuel pump power to the IRCM.

If the fuse is good (verify by checking power at IRCM pins 1,2, 10, & 12) then the relay(s) inside the IRCM is (are) bad.

Before condemning the IRCM, verify that a short to ground does not exist from IRCM pin 5. If such a short should occur, it would likely have taken out the relay(s) anyway.

Thanx Steve.

What is the IRCM? The cooling fan does work because when I was running the self test it came on.

I do have a toggle switch spliced into one of the wires for the inertia switch as an anti-theft device, I suppose there is a chance the switch crapped out. I need my damn test light.

well, all the fuses are good. not what I had hoped to find. It looks like I need to find a spare IRCM. Which ones are compatable if any? do I need one from a 92 also?

If it is the IRCM what would have caused it and what can I do to prevent it again? Or do they just crap out on occasion?

You can try shorting the FP lead to ground on the Self Test connector to see if the fuel pump is A-OK. Otherwise, you're probably looking at a new CCRM (in 92 they switched from naming them IRCM to CCRM). Mine has a letter "M" on it, and I would imagine yours does as well.

Which one is the ground and the FP lead? Do you just use a long piece of wire?

Problem found. After checking the FP via jumping wires as suggested above, I realized I was getting a click from the relay but no FP power still.

My origonal thoughts were rekindled. Although the circut had read OK according to my ohm meter, I was sure the toggle switch for my fuel cut-off crapped out. I pulled it out hard wired the two wires and dure enough, power to the FP. SImple $2 part had failed.

Thanx for the help guys, if nothing else I understand my SHO's wiring system a lil better today than I did a week ago ;)

I had that problem,

make sure the enertia switch is not in the off, or knocked out position, It might be that you just need to replace the ignition switch, I had both things happen and can't remeber which was it, but the enertia switch is on the back of the trunk on the drivers side wall under the carpet, if it is not that, maybe you need a new switch, they are not expensive, good luck!
