Sounds like a lose connection to me. Check the connections of wires on your window switches and window motors. The could just be corroded or pulling away. Sometimes going over certain terrain (ie: bumps and potholes) can make them move around.

If the statement that "none of the buttons do anything" refers to the controls on the driver's door as well as the local switches on each door then you have a connection problem in the driver's door. Either the conductors to the large barrel connector in the door jamb or the terminals within the connector. Is the window "lock" button depressed on the driver's control panel?

If it is only one of the two buttons that controls each window then the problem may just be carbon at the switch contacts. The switches can be easily removed from (at least the Gen I) door panels and disassembled. Run a thin strip of emery cloth or sandpaper between the electrical contacts in the switch. Finish with a spray of electrical contact cleaner. They are very sturdy switches and can be easily cleaned.
