Dorothy’s 93 SHO ATX Auto shifting problems = $$$ Frustrated

# unusually lazy between shifts (unlike SHO)
# Concern = After hard (panic) brakeing , and immediate (within a second or two) acceleration - a hard “bang” into gear ….very bad
#Concern = 50-55 mph -apply full acceleration (passing with foot to floor) RPM’s go excessive as if going into too low a gear (or no gear) finally shifts with a “bang” ….very bad

“bang” defination = engine RPM’s rise & transmission engages late/hard

This “bang” impact is what concerns me – has happened several times and can be quite severe (worried that it will do damage)

Rebuilt transmission - Replaced TPS –No effect…[Trans guy says Trans checks out OK ? ?
Check engine light comes on only occasionally - no codes - Valve covers are leaking oil to plugs, but would like to sort this out first .
Frustrated -any suggestions ? (old Mustangs & Broncos much easier to diagnose)

Note: My 1st attempt to Thread -hope I got it right

VSS is always worth a shot, its cheap and can really screw with the tranny if it goes bad.

Transmission level full...Transmission was rebuilt within the last year....thought I had someone who knew what they were doing.....not so sure anymore?
Has never shifted as sharp as it should for a SHO, since rebuild
...am reluctant for him to take it back apart. if it should be something else...that's why I replaced the TPS .
It"s been a real money Pit lately. Wife loves her old SHO ,but only if everything is right ! Sounds like I need to try the VSS, and see what happens ?
Thanks guys ! Any more suggestions, give me a buzz ....
I'll update the thread if I solve this one.

Transmission should be covered -BUT...but it's a small shop (mechanic was recomended?!?) .......doesn't seem to be very happy..says that transmission is not strong enough for that engine etc. etc.....
He said transmission checked out OK- suggested the TPS might not show on the codes (I replaced TPS)
I'm searching here for theories or specific problems outside the trany ?????
trying work it out reasonably ....we'll see ????

sounds like you could as so use a D4U1 in there also, that will make a bi diff. Is it like your getting ready to take off, and the rpms go up and the transmission takes it sweet time to go! If so that sounds like the plantary gear is going also! Same as mine!

Sounds like the guy that rebuilt your tranny didn't do a very good job and now he is trying to make excuses (ie: your TPS, tranny isn't strong enough for the motor, and blah blah blah).

The tranny is just fine for the motor when it is built correctly (the original one lasted 15 years, yet his doesn't last one year?). The transmission may 'check out' fine electrically, but if he didn't build it properly the electrical party may be fine, but the mechanical parts not so much.

It boils down to one thing. You paid for the transmission to be rebuilt, so it should operate as if it was brand new. If it doesn't it is his responsibility to fix it.

How many total miles on the car?

I have built a total or 5 SHO AX4X trans (5). 2 were mine and I made them shift harder. There are hard part upgrades from the 93 to the 94/95. If you dont get the correct parts it may shift a little soft. But, the 93 shifted fine stock. What are your shift points now? The D4U1 computer changes the shift points and increases the pressure in the lines under load. If your trans is Banging after decell.. that points me to a foward clutch issue. like the piston seal is leaking by, that would also account for what sounds like the "slipping" thats acceling hard and hearing the motor reving faster than it should be for the speed you are going. However, many of the A4 trans had pump fin wear issues. There were updates for all of this including a torque converter and **** tubes so the D4U1 computer can put to good use the increased pressure. I suggest you take it to a dealer.. Why you ask??? Well I work at a ford dealer, I've rebult many trans.. heres the great thing... If I can't figure out an issue with all the special books, online help, talking to 1000s of other techs.. I can call Ford Motor Company and talk to an enginer... It can be fixed correctly. you may think it cost too much, but it was payed for once already and not done correctly... why not take it to dealer and hold them accountable for making it perfect? These trannys can hold the power and them some without and issue. Call a company called Sonax in NH and they can get plenty of factory parts if you cannot find them.. and some tire pounding goodies too

SHO has about 170xxx miles , new VSS going in Thursday...then we'll see what happens?
Transmission works fine "poking" around - but even then, is slow (sometimes) between gears. Mechanic says it's inconsistent, so thinks it's external ?????

Ford dealer wasn't much help solving a previous problem, so I didn't use them.
I could have used the next Ford dealer (about 60 miles away- works on SVT etc)
.......Yea !, should have learned by now......... DUH ! ! !
Thanks Guys, I'll let you know what happens, Ron (BONDO)

Note: We've had so much rain, I tossed SHO Hubcaps out and they sprouted up parts cars & they look just like MaMa = 3-Emerald Green 93ATX's ( I cant throw away a early Bronco or Mustang eather)
I think I have a problem ! ? !
