My 89 has an Ultima from O'Reilly's that has lasted for about 6+ years. The 92 has the same, and I haven't replaced that one for about 2-3 years.

I've had great success with Bosch units in other vehicles.

How do you battery cables look when you pull back some insulation? If they're corrodedand green, I'd replace them.

Mine have always been the solenoid going bad. The plastic breaks away from the metal and it rotates in its own case. I got out of my old 92 one day, shut the drivers door, and the starter started cranking and off went the car.

Maybe that's why mine last longer - I've always run Mobil 1 and changed it every 10k miles, so not that many oil baths....

My old ATXs original starter went out at about 100k, and the new one got real sluggish after every oil change. I guess I should have made some effort to cover it up, but I never had that problem with any other car. My new ATX does not have this issue, the starter has been replaced at some point in the past. BTW, it rolled 10k today on the new tranny, still going strong. woohoo!

I have a coolant bottle that i cut up, so when i change the oil i can put it under the filter. Then i dont have to worry about it being covered in oil.

There are certain starter rebuilds that are notorious for failing in a year or so, unfortunately I can't remember which one it is. Maybe search it on this thread, it came up about a year ago.

I just changed what im going to call the original motorcraft starter on my '90 with 256k on it. Only reason it went is because of a faulty solenoid that kept it cranking and fried it.

My SHO has had 2 starter replacements in its lifetime. The first was in 2002, NAPA rebuild installed. The second was in 2008, NAPA aftermarket new manufactured starter installed, lifetime warranty.

I just toss a shop rag on the starter top, pull the filter off and put the new one in quickly. When I remove the rag, I just whipe it like a napkin cleaning off the top for any little residue. My starters are crispy clean. I just found the cut up bottles an extra mess, putting oil on the subframe and wire loom in the area.

Meh, i havent really had any issues. Seems to work well for me, but whatever you can do to keep the oil off of it helps.

It'***** or miss with the aftermarket rebuilds. I've been through at least 2 on all my Gen 2's, but had much better success with the G1 units for longevity. I only had to replace one g1 starter thus far (knock on wood)...

haha I remember I told you about this but never showed you a pic! gen 1 starters for the win ;)
