Just replaced what appeared to be the factory starter on my white 94 at 160k+. My red 94 got a "new" one a couple years ago at around 110k. I've been getting a lot more than a year out of them.... (up till now...) ;)

My original lasted until 2002 (it's a 1995). Now with the rebuilds, they bust every year. Mine just went out unexpectedly this morning. I've done it, a mechanic has done it, and 2 friends have done it (both have exceptional mechanical skill)...no matter what, after a year or less, they go out. Doesn't matter if it's a motorcraft or autozone part.

It'***** or miss with the aftermarket rebuilds. I've been through at least 2 on all my Gen 2's, but had much better success with the G1 units for longevity. I only had to replace one g1 starter thus far (knock on wood)...

My original starter made it until 2006 or so, when it finally gave up the ghost. The replacement starter is a no-name from a local parts warehouse, with a noisy bendix (anyone who's heard my car start knows what I'm talking about), and I've never had an issue with it.

Go figure...

Better Starters

I had nearly the same starter issues with my Gen 1.

Finally I spoke with a fairly knowledgeable counter guy at NAPA. He said to step up to a German built, re-manufactured starter with the rear support that comes stock on the Gen 1's. He said that it comes with a lifetime warranty.

I kept the warranty in the glove box and wouldn't you know it, that was 8-10 years ago.

Mine have always been the solenoid going bad. The plastic breaks away from the metal and it rotates in its own case. I got out of my old 92 one day, shut the drivers door, and the starter started cranking and off went the car.

I'm a firm believer that with starters and alternators your best bet is to have them re-built locally by an extablished rebuilder, who re-builds on-site. Most of the rebuit stuff you get from Autozone and the rest is rebulit outside the U.S. at who knows where by people who could care less. The "lifetime" warranty they may come with doesn't mean much when the starter won't turn and you're stuck some place you don't want to be.

I picked up a spare Motorcraft starter on RockAuto for about 50 bucks--it was a wholesaler closeout deal. I figure I might need it someday.

Another killer (on my previous DD '89) was oil dribbled all over the starter from changing the oil. Gummed everything up, bendix stuck in or out, depending on how it felt that day.

Relocation kit fixed that problem nicely. Never changed the starter on my current DD which appears to be running the original from late '88. The PO was the original owner and actually kept pretty good records.

Of course, now I'm going to be facing a no-start issue when I leave work... :)

Yup. I used to go through a starter a year. Iwasnt sure if it was the oil changes that beat them up, or just being re-man junk. I never actually forked up the cash to get a real starter though. Ill be sure to next time around.

My 92's original lasted until 2004, and the AdvanceAutoParts replacement is still going strong after ~5 years / 50k miles. Knock on wood...

I am super careful to always cover the starter with a bag when I change the oil. I have no idea if this helps or hurts anything - I just don't like it messy.

My original one lasted 8 years.

Then Autozone stepped in. Since then I have had starters last as long as 18 months and as little as 3 days.

starter

Just changed my original 1990 SHO at 97,780 miles on 1/10/2010 w/ a
Delco Starter 3361136 from rock auto closeout for $38.60 to my door so I bought the motorcraft closeout starter for $54.79 to my door. Schucks quoted me $75.99 plus a $15 core and there was no cores on the rockauto starters
Almost 2 for the price of 1
