I've had to fix this before. On mine, the noise was coming from something not being grounded properly. If you just fixed your peakers, I'd assume it's not the same whine. Did you do anything on the back of the radio? I think that's where my bad ground was.

it's definitely not power steering, doesn't change at all when the wheel is turned. i just noticed it tonight, because i was finally driving in a quiet neighborhood with no music on at all, heard it, then turned off heat, etc, and it was still there, i'm going to do a full 'fluids' check on saturday, but the initial quick check i just did seems ok.. there's no check engine/oil/coolant anything lights, nothing except the whine. it's not very loud either, and does not sound like power steering (leak in another older car my sister had, taurus gl wagon, so i'm ?? shrug i also don't think it's electrical because everything was off except for my lights, i'll see if it still does it tomorrow during the drive to school

Is your clutch ok? If so, most likely it's coming from something operated by one of the assy belts -- possibly a bearing in one of the idler pullies. Best bet is to listen under the hood while working the throttle to isolate the noise. It's kind of hard to hear the noise over the internet! wink

You really need to say WHERE the whine is coming from.

The speakers?

Under the hood?

From the transmission? Does it goe away if you push the clutch in?

From the area of the belts? Does it sound a bit like a turbo?

Can you duplicate the sound if you park the car and open the hood? If so, try to pinpoint the source of the noise. AutoZone sells mechanic's stethoscopes for $10.

alright thanks all, i'm going to try to do that tomorrow.. seems like it only happens after the car has warmed up for a while, but i dunno, it was only that one time i heard it,and couldn't pinpoint it, so i'll do a check tomorrow

Grab your longest flat head screw driver and head out to the car. With the engine on, touch the tip of the screw driver to the different accessories and stick your ear to the handle of the screw driver.

The screw driver acts as a stethoscope and will show you what the culprit is.

Needless to say, you will want to practice care when doing this.

I recall somebody told me that it was the timing belt tensioner pulley. I have the whine currently and it is best heard under moderate rpms in 3rd gear. But is is not tranny releated, it also whines in 4 & 5th. I havent bothered to look into it but I know its not the water pump!

I thought i was the only one with this problem, i get the same whine when i step on the gas. the whine comes from the rear speakers and maybe a little from the front ones too. i never had this whine when i bought this car only i had alot of speaker and amp upgrades. Couldn't upgrade the deck because i have a gen 3 sho. Any suggestions on how cure this would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for two years pr sp and i've almost gotten used to it but i would really like to remedy this.

Im with Shoooooo
Im willing to bet it is something as stupid as a tensioner pulley on the accessories side of the engine. If not that then one of the accessories. Use the stethascope idea. It works, and tell us how things work out for you.
