Hi,

I'm about to replace the fuel pump in my '89 SHO. I purchased one from Autozone, a direct replacement it saids.($78.00 pump+sock filter)

My question: At ShoTimes, the fuel pump replacement article states that a Mustang '85-'97 fuel pump will do just fine. I'm wondering what Mustang engine fuel pump its refering to? Would it be one for the v6 or v8 Mustang? I was just wondering for clarifications sake. Are the 'Stang pumps higher flow? I don't plan on "hopping-up" my SHO so this Autozone fuel pump should do just fine. Now, hopefully it'll fix my no-start problem. Well, my SHO will start sometimes(rarely), and when it does, runs for about 5 sec's then shuts down.
I already did the work to correct the "oil in the plugs wells" fix, hoping that was the root cause of my no-start/no-run. No dice.

Ah well, hopefully I can get this "gal-friend named SHO" up and running again.

You all take care,

JimB

Most SHO owners purchase the Walbro pump thru http://www.autoperformanceengineering.com/

Most of the pumps on the market are repackaged Walbro pumps many times at higher prices.

Select the application guide and you will see the FPF316 155lph pump for $78
You will see the kit is different then those listed for the Mustang. The kit comes with all the required parts and detailed instructions to make the job very easy. Do you plan on making a access panel under the rear seat or dropping the tank? If you need instruction for making an access panel under the rear seat just ask.

Have fun,

Hi KerryT,

I went to your SHO site. That's a fine SHO you got there. You and others have done upgrades I can only dream of.(lack of money and skills).

Also went to the fuel pump site. Looks like I've missed out on a superior pump.

I'll be dropping the tank to replace the pump, but your method of making an access panel is very interesting. That would be a very interesting article toread should you decide to publish it.

How did you fare against those other cars in that shot of you on a track? Did you "whip-em"?

Have you beat the trunk and "moon roof" leak? I used many a tube of silicon on the tail lights and still my SHO trunk leaks. The roof window I haven't tried any fix on it yet.

You all take care,

Thanks Jim my SHO has treated me well and has been alot of fun to modify. :thumb:
ON the track the old stanges aren't a problem, the newer supercharged ones are usually more then I can handle. Sometimes I'm suprised :D how well these cars can do on a track, I find myself able to run nose to tail with the likes of twin turbo S4 Audi, and V8 Sunbeam Tiger for a complete 20 min track session even with street tires. Now a STI is another story those things flat move...............

Here is the web site for the fuel pump replacement under the rear seat.

I replaced my original pump before it failed at 140k. I looked at it as perventitive maintenance before heading out on the trip to SHO Convention last July. Mostly I was conserned about having room to drop my tank with the FPS Sub frame connectors and Dynomax catback system. This method took that worry out of the equation. After doing it this way I would recommend it to everyone. The pictures make it look pretty crude but if you take your time with a air nippler you can make pretty clean cuts. Once the job was completed I was able to fold the flap back over the hole, drill a hole in the flap and one in the floor large enough to run a zip tie thru and then seal the seams with weatherproof calking, reinstall the sound deadner square that is cut out to the measurements with some duck-tape. From start to finish took only about 90mins. The measurements are right on the money, you just need to be REAL careful how deep you cut because the fuel lines are right under the floor panel.

I have no sunroof so leaks are not a problem, and my trunk has never leaked even in the raining Northwest weather. Now of course the car sits in the garage under a cover during the off season. A tip on your trunk leaks is to get in the trunk with a flashlight while someone runs water across the trunk lid and tail light areas. I've read were many find the water leak at the top of the tail lights or the mounting holes.

Read the article. Didn't seem all that complicated. I may have some cutting disks somewhere in the garage. Heh, heck of a way to find out theres been a fuel leak there all along.

Thanks again for the tips and link,

JimB
