You will not be able to really see the ATX VSS in its natural habitat. The job is done mostly by feel.
You can take the y-pipe off and access it from below with small hands. Or, you can take the passanger wheel and fenderliner off, lower the passanger side subframe, and come in from the side.
Twist and pull the heat shield to the back of the car to get it off.
Disconnect the harness going to the VSS (and the oil pressure sender - it gets in the way and can break)
Pull the clip that holds the speedo cable into the VSS, and wresltle the cable out.
Take off the single 10mm bolt (using 1/4 drive socket, universal joint, extension, and rachet) holding the VSS onto the housing, and twist and pull out.
This is on your ATX, right? Hope this works for yours, as it did on my '93.
As for location, look at where the passanger side halfshaft goes into the transaxle case. Look up from the side to the top of it. There is a hockey puck like casting on the top. The VSS goes in that thing from the other side, nearly parallel with the engine.
See if this picture helps any.
