Pull the halfshaft out of the intermediate shaft here:

Or pull the halfshaft and intermediate shaft together and seperate them after, like this:

Just pull it out of the intermediate shaft. No need to take it out of the tranny unless you are doing clutch/tranny work.

i would pull it right out like you did.
most of the time you can't pull just the shaft out
they are rusted or seized up.
