<Just a rant> Car has had a torque converter shudder for a while. I was gonna try to fix it my self, even bought a salvage transmission to use as a rebuild core. Life/lack of facilities got in the way so opted to just have it done professionally. Finally got an appointment to have the transmission gone through and on the way to drop it off, the rear turbo came apart . yay </rant>
Staring to question the whole 1/4 million mile daily driver thing .

Car has 258k and some change on it. Not complaining, been a great (and fun) car, more than paid for itself (although I didn't buy it new)

Ain't that the truth. I'm actually gonna be driving it several hundred miles over the Thanksgiving holidays, and that's actually why I wanted to get the transmission sorted. Definitely could have chosen a worse time. Just gonna make a dent in the xmas budget.

I would've swapped the turbo myself in other circumstances (free labor) but they're only charging a couple hundred to install it while they're in there so, tough to argue with that.

The other one was replaced in 2020 Is it time to replace turbos?. When I did the front/left one the right/rear turbos were on back order. When I looked yesterday (after the right/rear failed) the left/front turbos are now on back order. I got lucky in that regard.
Completely different failure mode, last time the car started smoking excessively from the exhaust, this time the turbo failed catastrophically, screeching and grinding, no noticeable smoke but it was dark out so maybe it did.

Do you do anything special to make your stuff last so long?
I see your F-150 is over 200K also.

I am vigorous about maintenance and fluid changes but outside of that it seems to be a roll of the dice?

Very well could be. Being mass produced, there's absolutely a variation in the reliability of any particular model.

That being said, I do try to stay vigilant about maintenance/fluid changes (oil every 5k miles etc). They have not been what I would consider 'trouble free' miles. Some repairs that would cause people to 'discard' or replace their vehicle due to the cost, I can take care of myself. I've done timing sets on both the Taurus and the F150 (twice on both actually) also pretty much the entire suspension of the Taurus has been rebuilt (truck probably needs it). I even looked into rebuilding and swapping the transmission myself, but it requires a lot of special tools (over $3000 worth by my estimate) and lately I just haven't had the time or wherewithal to undertake it.

Now the combination of the transmission repair and turbo @ $4500 (that's the estimate, it's still at the shop) had me checking Autotrader for comps, but everything is still expensive. The cheapest SHO on Autotrader at the time I made the transmission appointment was $7500 and it also had 200,000+ miles on it so you don't know how it sits condition wise (although it was blue, which was the color I originally wanted, but I digress). Will it need the entire suspension rebuilt or even the same transmission repair in a few months etc.

The truck on the other hand I do plan to replace with a new Ranger (now 2024MY) when they come out. It runs and drives ok, albeit feels down on power (the twin turbo daily driver might actually be the reason the truck feels slower) but the biggest issue with it right now is RUST. I came home from work last week to find a 18-20 inch section of the rocker panel just laying in the driveway.

What year is your f-150? Thinking about a timing set in my 2014 coyote but I see burned oil at the tailpipe (black) over the past year. Even considering a whole new powertrain vs new truck.

2016 with 85k on the clock. Both turbos puked and burned all of the oil out of the engine. Ford tech put in almost 6 quarts and it burned that while he was working on it to diagnose the stumble/miss off of idle/no power/excessive smoke. No compression on number 2. Estimate to replace engine and both turbos...almost 25k. The dealership is going to warranty the engine, I pay for the turbos and related plumbing. This is my second SHO the last one a 2012 purchased new and traded in with 125k on it. Only repair was the PTU, normal stuff. I am fortunate my dealer is willing to work with me. You bet there are variations in production!

Estimate to replace engine and both turbos...almost 25k.

25k is ridiculous, a long block from Ford is only like $5300, add $1k for each turbo, and that still leaves $17k, no way labor & misc accounts for that.

$25k for just an engine replacement? I expected a good amount but that is alot
