I am taking my newly acquired 2013 SHO non PP to a reputable local mechanic tomorrow to get it tested and inspected. I bought it off marketplace because it had a ton of service records (new turbo, trans fluid change, new cv axles etc.) But I had the dreaded p0016 code on the way home. I fixed the light by changing the cam position sensor, but at hot idle I have what sounds like chain slap so I assume the job needs to be done. The car has 114k miles on it and I just need to know what to say to the mechanic tomorrow (testing that needs to be done, etc.) I just want to pay as little as possible to make the car run smoothly for a lot more miles, as I got a great deal on it and everything else seems perfect. From reading other threads I expect to be around $800-$1200 hopefully for the job to be done (including the water pump of course)

I had a new water pump and timing chain installed about 2.5 years ago. I don't remember the exact cost but I want to say it was around $1500 out the door. I'm in NC and it was a reputable shop with OEM parts but not a dealership. Mine is a 2012.

Mine was done right before I bought it, they did it because the water pump gave up so that was replaced too but the one thing I wish they had done was the oil pump, its a couple extra steps after the water pump comes out but its deep so while youre in there some preventative maintenance couldnt hurt. the pumps arent too expensive and I'd imagine the extra labor wouldnt be too steep, worth asking about. from the Ford/VW dealer that did the work to my car the invoice had a total of $3562 parts and labor so i'd guess a smaller shop would be cheaper, heres the service ticket from my car

My number one concern would be "Has he done this job before?"
These are not common cars and that is a big job with a lot of potential for things to be done wrong if not experienced with the repair.

The last thing you want to happen is for your car to be a "training" job!
