I have found some wheel adapters on-line that are made for ford cars that convert a 5x4.25 to 5x4.50, however they are 1in wide.....would these work on a SHO.....if so what size offset/backspaceing are we talkin? Also how wide of a rim could i go with?

If this will work then Im getting some mustang wheels.......

Thanks-Pete

Mustang wheel will not fit. The offset is wrong and the wheels/tires will stick out of the fenders.

Wrong... I had a small lot of similar adapters made a year ago and they fit just fine. These are probably being made by the guy that did all my work when I came to him with the idea.

Also, 05-up Mustang wheels have a VERY deep offset and will probably fit these cars even better than the 96-04 wheels.

I have problems with 8" wide wheels with 35mm offset. My thoughts were that moving the wheels out another 25mm will cause the wheels to stick out of the fenders (my front wheels are flush with the front fender and my rear fenders are cut and rolled). I have found that Mustang wheels have a more positive offset (with the exception of the newest mustang).

Yeah, pretty much.

If you look at it this way:

We know the offset needed to get an 8in wheel on a SHO is 38-42mm, right?

If the adapter is 1in thick, that's another 25mm of offset necessary.

So you're talking 65mm offset +/-. It's theoretically possible. But it falls down in practice.

The 17x8 Fox/SN95 GT wheels are 24mm offset IIRC. The 'normal' 17x9 Cobra Rs are also 24mm offset.

There were some 6.42in rear-spacing Cobra Rs so that's more like 36mm offset but those are quite rare now.

A 17x9 wheel for an S197 Mustang is 45mm offset. So still nowhere near enough.

But the S197 wheel with the 1" adapter gives you 70mm offset. Wouldn't that work perfect if you say you need about 65mm?

Absolutly correct. They do fit better in the wheel well than the older wheels did. I'd post pics of my old setup again but I don't feel like turning this thread into a crap throwing one.

That's backwards. The adapter is subtractive from offset, not additive.

If you've got an '05-up Mustang (S197) wheel with a 45mm offset and a 25mm thick spacer you have a net offset of 20mm, nowhere near enough for a SHO.

You guys are saying the SN95 wheels used with a 1" adapter would stick out of the wheel well.

The SN197 wheel has a deeper offset into the wheelwell, so with the same 1" adapter, it should not stick out as far. That's why I figure it would be a better candidate for the conversion.

Reread what I said.

A 17x9 S197 wheel has a 45mm offset which is effectively 20mm after a 1" spacer is taken into account.

The only way this is going to work is serious fender-stretching.

Still doesn't seem right to me. Sounds a bit overexaggerated.

Aside from the spacer deal, a better way to do it would be to modify the hubs for a 4.5 bolt pattern. That would allow the use of just about any 5x4.5 Ford rim you want, as well as allowing the use of Mustang rotors.

i've got lincoln LSE rims on my 91. the offset of the rims are 60mm and they have a 1" adapter which puts the rim right around 34mm offset. the rims are 17x8 and have 255's on them. they actually stick out a little too far. there is about 1/4" to 1/2" of space between the tire and strut. i like the look and it was exactly what i was looking for but others may not like it. also on a 91 i will have to have the rear fenders serverely pulled to fit the 255's. shes getting repainted so not a problem. thats my experience..
