Ok, when I'm accelerating slowly or mildly shifting into third is perfectly fine. But when I'm accelerating fast when I shift into third there is a brief grind followed by a pop into third gear. It sounds like I'm shifting without using the clutch or something, even though I am. The motor mounts have been checked and one replaced from pp in madison. Any idea's here guys? Thanks thumb

Well, why is it that this only happens at high loads and not at lower or intermediate loads?
Thanks

rebuild time, change your fluid to synthetic or syncromesh, atleast now if you can't afford the rebuild.

Hows yor clutch also?

The clutch as far as I know is in decent shape. I have not had any slipping or such. So you guys are reccomending changing the tranny fluid? I know I can get the syncromesh from GM, but what synthetic brands do you reccomend? Is there much of a price difference? And no, I really don't have the money for a rebuild. Also, does anyone know why this is only a problem when accelerating fast, and not at intermediate acceleration? Thanks again thumb

The syncro ring helps to mesh the gears when shifting, since the gear you are shifting into is not ever up to engine/input shaft speed. 2nd and third are usually the first syncros to go, since 1)these are used the most often, and 2)usually the most abused during heavy acceleration.

What you CAN do, is change your fluid to something a bit more viscous, like synthetic or Redline tranny fluid, and then learn to PAUSE, for like a half-second, when making the shift into 2nd and/or third gears - let the input shaft speed come down a hair, before slamming it into the next gear.

My dad raced Italian cars in Italy in the late 50's, and I learned to drive in old Alfa Romeo's - notorious 2nd gear syncro-eaters. He always told me to hold the shifter as if it were a jewel, or an egg - don't force it! You could also learn to match revs a little better - blip the throttle just a little while the clutch is in, applying GENTLE pressure on the shifter into the third gear gate - it'll drop right in. THEN floor it.

Sometimes ya gotta slow down to go fast... :D
