i had my car professionally waxed about a year ago. i need to do it again, but blowing $100 is not my idea of fun. this is something i can do myself, correct?

what is the best wax out there regardless of price? i figure the higher the UV protectant the better as the sun is what kills paint. how do i avoid the "swirl scratches." i always get those when i polish my own car.

see ya,
Robby

I think you'll find the Meguiar's 3-step will give the car a really nice finish. I bought an orbital buffer a couple of years ago, and have never had any swirl problems since.

Zymol Is the best! Even comsumer reports(which I hate) rated it the best. It even smells good and it's worth the $10-15 that you spend. Other than that Meguires IS very good.

I'm an auto detailer and at work we use a wax called fine seal. it works alright.

However, I personally use a product made by Presta. It's called Ultra Gloss. I've used Zymol and I like it but i think this stuff is better. it leaves the deepest shine i've ever seen. You can pick it up at an auto body supplies shop.

Try this stuff caled liquid glass. After you do some buffing this is like an extra clearcoat and has a great shine.

SHooo & Mr SHo are absolutely correct. Meguiars 3 step and zymol are the best!!! I actually use Zymol as my second step because it is a polish and not a wax. i use Meguiars paint cleaner for the first and meguiars gold class for the third. follow these steps and you'll find an amazing result in the appearance and shine of your car.

hey chris,

what wax has the best UV protection? UV is what kills paint, correct?

Robby
I dont think any wax protects better than any other, I think the protection may last longer with one wax to another. A synthetic wax will last longer than say carnauba wax but I don't think either will protect better against the sun. As long as you have wax on your car, you shouldn't have to worry about it. Once the wax is gone, you can kiss your shine good bye. However, if you do have or get sun damage, Just get it high speed buffed. Usually brings the shine right back. I've detailed a few Red SHO's and the results were amazing. They would come in and they would already look pretty damn good, but after they're buffed, they look absolutely incredible. Good Luck!

my sho is white. after my first wash and wax i was unimpressed. i had used megiuar's cleaner wax which worked alright, but it didn't have "that" shine. so after talking to several people i decided to try megiuar's 3 step system. step one the cleaner, step 2 the polish,a nd step 3 the wax. i add another step to the process, an extra coat of wax (gold class). my car shines so much and looks incredible.

poissonverte - I use the megiuar's 3 step process on my red '89. Sometimes I get the blotches and streaks. My impression is it's that not all the bad stuff on the paint has been removed. I give it another pass, which seems to help. My paint is really old though. Just a thought.

I have to agree that the MaGuires 3 step is about as good as you can get. My car is a dark blue, so if the wax doesn't do a good job, you notice right away, and I have been happy with MaGuires.

Anyone that hasn't tried a clay bar? If you haven't, you should. It's amazing, the finish will be as smooth as glass. Also, I have a no name brand, it works fine. I bought it at one of the discount stores.

I had the clay sticking to the finish until I learned to use it. Plenty of water and slight pressure works for me.

I really enjoy the Zymol wax! It works great.

Clay bar is another marvel thats does wonders.

poissonverte, your car is black. When I would wax a back car, I made sure to not do it in the sun or in extreme heat. It will leave a residue on the car. If the residue remains after a wax, give it a spray of quick wax and buff it out with a terrey towel. Good luck!
