I would like my car to stop as well as it accels. I've looked into the 96 upgrade and it's too much right now. Is there a brand or type of brake pads and/or rotors that will improve performance with out breaking the bank?

To do any real brake upgrade, you'll have to change knuckles. After that, you can get loaded Gen III calipers for less than $50 a side and rotors for about $70. So you're looking at about $160 plus knuckles that you'd get at a junkyard to do the 96 upgrade.

Short of that, you can pick up some Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads at Autozone and some cheap rotors to go with them. These will be fine for the street. Could also pick up some stainless lines for a better feel.

Make sure if you do the upgrade you get the caliper to knuckle bolts (4) they are different from the 93's and Ford charges $15 each for the bolts so just pick them up when you get the knuckles

If you can't afford a size upgrade, get some very good pads like PFCM pads and new rotors. Follow the brake inprocedures so you will have an even deposit of the pad material on the rotors for maximum effectiveness. Keep in mind that once you use carbon metallic pads on the rotors and you switch to a different material, the brakes won't work well until the old material is worn off.

Procedure for bedding pads and seasoning rotors. I have followed these procedures and never had warped rotor problems on any of the brake systems.

I have had the pad/rotor upgrade for a while, but I didn't see much change. I just added the s/s brake lines and the difference is amazing. The balance, feel and modulation is great. Makes for a much better street set-up.

I added cyro treated rotors and PFCM pads back in 1997 on my SHO. I hammered my brakes many times and went through three sets of pads with out the rotors ever warping. I would still get some fade braking hard from illegal speeds so I upgraded to my current TCE/Baer Racing 12.5" set up with earls. I don't have any fade now and better pedal feel. Brian has the cryo rotors on his SHO and is happy with them.

I got the calipers and brackets for the 96 upgrade from a low mileage '02 sable for $16 a side, the knuckles were on my parts car but you can get them from any 94-95 SHO or SLO for cheap at a boneyard.

You can adjust the rear bias valve to increase the rear brake pressure. Or get bias valve plugs from Shonut, as long as the ABS works.
