I don't have any manuals for the car except some cheap hack copy of the ford service CD-Rom so I don't know for sure. I'm sure there will be more than one opinion. Is 1800rpm in 3rd in town lugging? i have always thought around 2k feels like it starts to lugg down. anyone got a real answer?

I'd say its relevant to speed vs what gear your are in in a MTX. Automatics take care of this by upshifting.

I'd say the following is lugging:

5th gear under 45 MPH
4th gear under 35 MPH
3rd gear under 25 MPH
2nd gear under 15 MPH

These numbers are just off the top of my head, mayeb others can be more accurate..

Have to take into account the load on the car as well.....uphill, towing, etc.

If I'm coming up the mountain highway here in AZ (6% grade for 15 miles), I dont use 5th gear at all even though I'm going 65.

yeah load plays a big factor!

i don't think there is really any one particular spot where u can say it begins to lug because there are a lot of variables. You should be able to feel when it lugs as a good 5 speed driver, and downshift...

It is directly related to % of load.

If it isnt goin' when you bury the pedal, you need to downshift.
These motors love to rev, so let them rev!

I never put more than half-throttle into a gear, unless Ive got the revs above 2500.

I understand how load effects everything. What I was asking for was on flat ground, so I can get a baseline and try not to hurt my bearings

Above 2k rpms for normal accelerating and about 1700 rpms for a steady cruise with no load. For an agressive acceleration, it varies by the gear. You can get on it pretty good at 2500 rpms in second gear, but say you're in third or fourth, it's not going to get up and go as quick because there's more load and less gear advantage. So in the end, it's hard to say, it's more of a feel for the load [feels like a lag before the available power gets you moving faster].

I usually run 2-2500RPM but as we all know the higher we get the better it is these cars jsut dont have the low end; as one of my friend wil lsoon find out. He drove my car and as cocky as he is goes mines faster im lie ku didnt even bring it past 4k rpm hes lie ki can tell. I was liek like :laugh_ti: just wait.

To maintain the same speed, not to accelerate, I go as low as 1500 rpm. I wonder if that is too low. How does lugging hurt the bearings?

When you put a load on an engine that is spinning at a low rpm, lubrication becomes a problem. This is because the oil pump is related to engine speed.

Slow rpm = less oil being pumped
High rpm = more oile being pumped

Thank you TYSHO! you told me exactly what I was looking for. I try to keep her above 2k usually, but I did wonder if it was ok at times to go lower. Dammed WI has 25mph speed limits in town, and I always 'felt' like I was lugging it in 3rd, but 2nd feels like I am ready to start a race.

no, 25 MPH in FIRST would be race ready :naughty:

25 mph cruising, Im in 2nd. Heck, 3rd will take you to over 100 mph. No reason to use it at 25!

Yep, sometimes when I cruise at 20mph for the near by school zone, I find myself in 3rd gear because there is a slight downhill. But once the zone is over, it goes right back to 2nd gear before I even try accelerating. I don't think I'd be in 3rd if the surface was flat.

****Dammit, my computer logged me out before I could finish my reply and I lost it all. I'll attempt to recreate it****

Okay, I figured I'd mention this because I've noticed the number 2,000 being thrown around a lot, and I think it might be promoting an irrational fear.

People do not need to be afraid of cruising with the tach below 2,000rpm. The only thing they should be wary of is throwing open the throttle at such a low engine speed.

I try to drive efficiency-minded, pardon the cumbersome term. I'll bury the tach needle into the mid 1,000s as quickly as possible when cruising around town. This means that I accelerate gently through all the gears and I'm upshifting at just over 2,000rpm.

The surface roads in my area are predominantly 40mph and sometimes 30mph zones, and I get away with cruising in exclusively 5th gear and 4th gear, respectively (granted, I usually drive 5mph or so above the limit). The moment I need to change speed (either accelerating or decelerating), I drop 2 gears and do my business.

I'm essentially echoing TYSHO's point here; I'm reiterating because I think a lot of people are spending extended periods driving in much jumpier and gas-hungry gears than they need to, out of this fear of 2,000rpm.

Like TYSHO said, you will be able to feel your engine behave differently under different loads and conditions. You will be able to feel when you need to downshift... after a while, you'll know when the shift needs to come and will be able to do so before you even feel it. Avoiding engine lugging, even when cruising at low rpms as often as I do, is quite easy.

These numbers are pretty much the same as the manual says for optimal fuel economy. IIRC the shift points are...

1st 17 mph
2nd 27 mph
3rd 35 mph
4th 44 mph

THese numbers are probably the slowest you can shift without bogging the motor in the next gear. That's my best guess.

It also says you can shift before those numbers to increase gas efficiency.
