ok i know i should know this but i don't
what kind of oil should i use in my SHO
it uses a little oil i have to put a quart in about every 400-500 miles or so ineed to replace the plug well seals cuz they leak a lil bit. but other than that no leaks. What prompted this was this morning i tried to start my car and it was around 20 degrees. I heard a loud whine and the valves tapping like crazy. I have penzoil 20w50 in it now. any help?

I'd drain the 20w50 immediately and put in 5w-30 as the manual states......... Why the choice of 20w50?

So the engine is burning 1 qt every 400-500 miles? That's quite a bit of oil consumption if you are sure there's no external leaks. Just keep an eye on the oil level.

Haha, you just opened up a can of worms.

Honestly, ditch that Pennzoil ASAP! I've seen plenty of SHO valve train pictures with the covers off and those that used Castrol GTX, Motorcraft and Mobil 1 were the cleanest with minimal caramel coloring. I use Castrol GTX 5W-30 with the FL1A filter. Do not use Fram filters. For further research use the search function; you'll find lots of info.

I agree with the castrol gtx although others don't... I do like the fram filters though...No need to argue, everyone has their own preferances... I do agree that others are better, it just depends on your own personal preferance(just don't use penzoil it's crap). I have heard that the SHO motor should not have synthetic in it and I have heard that that's all I should use. IMHO it's just what you like. If you have a bad experience with a company/brand then don't use it anymore. You should, however, stick with the 5w-30 or close to that at least...
Good luck!!! thumb

I use wally mart supertech filters and supertech 5W30 or mobil 1 5w30 (depends on how I'm feeling).

Supertech filters are top notch and the price can't be easily beaten.

BTW fram = crap :D

half-way there, I think.
Man - use the search function please. This question is asked atleast once a month.

For dino oil most everyone recommends Castrol GTX 10w-30

For Synthetic most everyone will recommend Mobile 0ne of varing viscosities.

I can tell you one thing right now - get that 20w-50 out of there. I wouldn't use that even for race prepped SHO, I might mix a quart in.

i have also heard that putting a synthetic in a high milage engine is bad cuz it to slick and the seals wont hold it causing the motor to leak like a siv

I would recommend Valvoline Max-Life or Castrol GTX High Mileage oil. They have additives to help slow down oil leaks/consumption. 10W-30 if you live in a warm climate, or 5W-30 where it's cold. Couldn't hurt anything to try it!

WTF is wrong with Fram filters?
I use castrol oil and a fram filter, but it is really just a matter of preference.

ok take the miles between when i put in a quart or so to top it off with a grain of salt i put in a quart when i check the oil and its low my motor rarely smokes and when it does happen its at a very cold start and only smokes for a few seconds i had atribituted this to the plugwell seals and needing a valve job (keep in mind i have never taken my motor apart) But if this is a serious problem i might need a rebuild guide here pretty soon _scott would you happen to have one?

You really should be running 5W30 instead of a 10W40 weight motor oil in your engine.

The PZ brand doesn't matter. The detractors of this brand (and others) are generally working from an ignorance of the petroleum engineering used to manufacture and produce today's motor oils.

Ignorance can be cured with education. Can't fix stupid.
