What is this?

Ok having issues with leaking oil cooler hoses (see emergency help section) so I took off engine cover to see if I could route the new hoses my self or if I had to let the stealer take my money from me....

This is what I found... what looked like the freaking throttle cable unhooked. The only place I can think it goes is this box mounted in the center of this picture.. what is it?

No problem with throttle responce other then a little "tight" coming off a light some times seems to stick..?? And crusie control works fine......

Heres where the wire is/was tied into..

It's the IMRC. It's a POS and it breaks often. It opens the secondary butterflies. I say toss it and never look back. It doesn't help performance or fuel economy. If you want more info, search "IMRC" as there are tons of threads about it.

Mr. SHO,

If you don't reconnect the IMRC wouldn't you secondaries remained closed. If they remain closed doesn't that drastically affect performance.

no, whay MR SHO is trying to say is to wire open the secondaries instead of buying a new IMRC that is going to cost arround $150.00 and could break again.

Right, thank you.

My IMRC took a dump two years ago, so I wired the secondaries open as a temporary fix. A few months later, a friend found an IMRC box/cable assembly and sold it to me for $5, so I put it in. That one died on me a few months later. So the secondaries got wired open once again. There has never been any difference in performance or fuel economy either way, so I have no desire to mess with the IMRC again.

I wouldn't be so sure there is no difference in performance. I agree, your fuel economy will stay the same (that is regulated with the MAF), but the car will be missing that grunt down low at WOT until around 3450 rpm.

Does anyone have a dyno graph with and without the v8 secondary valves working? On a v6 it makes a bigger difference. Hmm, maybe a dyno won't show it anyways, due to the atx and t/c locking...

The V8 doesn't even have secondary runners. Trust me, it makes no difference. Paul Nimz ran a few back-to-back 1/4-mile comparisons and there was no difference in times whether the secondary valves were open all the time or opening normally at 3350.

We've been through this debate many times and there has never been a shred of credibility to the intake design. If there had been a bit more room under the hood, I'm positive Ford/Yamaha would have used true secondaries. This intake we have is a comprimised design. There are only two benefits to this design: decreased noise, and smoother idle on subfreezing startups.

SHOChuck, have your intake cleaned and that will free up your accelerator. Mine felt sticky stiff like that and the one in our Expedition did the same thing. Expess Oil did a "SynClean" on the Ex and Ford cleaned mine. Fixed the problem. :thumb:

Hmmm, I just assumed the intake was the same as the v6... I stand corrected! :biggrin: I'm going to pull my intake off and check it out (I've owned my gen 3 for less than 3 weeks now).

not sure if any of you SHOheads would know since yall have yamaha's, but maybe you will... would wiring the secondaries open on a duratec have the same affect as it would on the SHO? wire them open and clear the codes?

Depends... didn't the '99 Duratecs have true secondary runners? Like two runners for each cylinder? In that case, I'd say you'd hurt performance by wiring them open. But in a pinch, you could unplug the IMRC box, wire the secondary valves open, and clear the KAM to get rid of the MIL.
