Hey guys.
This may sound stupid but I have to ask.
What if the people that replaced my CPS did'nt gap it?
Would the car even run?

I had mine replaced long before I knew of the Forum.
I'm sure the guys that done it never worked on many if ANY SHOs.
Would I know if it were not gapped right?

As long as the vane never contacts the sensor element, the gap is at all not critical.

The recommended gap of .030 puts the vane squarely in the middle of the opening in the senso and prevents damage to the sensor.

Just a heads up, I was told by a friend not to worry about the gap, so I put in a new cps unit. I installed it exactly like the original one (at least I thought). I bolted everything back together and the car wouldnt start. When I cranked the car, I got the rpms to move but the engine would not catch. I went to the parts store and got a gapper, came back home and took everything back off. I gapped the CPS to the correct specs and put everything back on. The car now started. I am no mechanic by any means, but paying $4 for the tool in the first place would have saved me alot of time and frustrations. I am not saying that the previous posts are wrong they are correct , but just saying, maybe a $4 tool will save you headaches later (in case it is installed wrong). Hope this helps.

yeah, a feeler guage should be in your toolbox anyway.

i was just going by personal experience, when i was just a learnin' and i installed the cps, i read the feeler guage wrong and was way way off (too small), but far enough to not be in contact with the vane.

6 months later, i've never fixed it ;)
