OK well About 5 months ago I had a waterpump replaced in my 94atx. At that time my mechanic said my alternator was loud and probally should be replaced soon. I didnt bother until today. I replaced it and the so called alternator noise is still there. It sounds just like it did before the waterpump was replaced. What else would cause a whining noise in the general area of the water pump?

If needed I will take some audio of the noise in the morning .

Could be bearings in the timing belt tensioner....my 92's making a sound that rises and falls with the revs, and that's exactly the problem. I'm almost hesitant about fixing it, cuz I've had three people ask me if it was a supercharger.....

I have not checked that But I will do tommorow. Im ticked that I broke down and spent the money for a new alternator and it was not even the problem ...lol

eh...consider it preventive maintenence. You have to remember that not a lot of altenators can survive time spent at 7000rpms. Not good for ANY bearings, for that matter...but then, who can resist?

before I begin . What kind of a job am I looking at getting to the timing belt tensioner?

The whining 'supercharger' sound is generally due to your timing or serp belt being too tight.

Well I did think of that. Like I said earlier I replaced the waterpump a few months back and had the timing belt done as well( didnt mention this) . The whining noise was also there before the work was done. I replaced the alt and serp belt yesterday.

So Thats where im having issues. These noises where here prior to having any work done. I would like to have someone take a look at it But the one thing I have noticed is you mention the word SHO in this area and mechanics run away from me ...lol. Nobody wants to touch the damn thing. I have goten pretty handy owning this car the past 2 years...hahaha

Take your surpentine belts back off and spin all the pulleys by hand. You should be able to hear/feal which one is bad. If you don't find an accessory pulley's with bad bearings then its time to check the timing belt tensioner.

OK well I did as mentioned above and it does appear that a idler pulley is no good. I removed it and if you spin it slowly it seems to click or stick in one spot . Is a bearing for this available somewhere?

hmmm it would figure. Cant find a bearing anywhere. Ford wantsme to order the whole pulley at a cost of 135 dollars . and there is no local bearing shop anywhere. any ideas

Ahh I got it. Im not sure that is the right one. 4-6 rib? Im looking for a bearing for the idler not tensioner. part number on the bearing is 35BD219DUK (NSK)

Just for future reference, if you have a noise like you and lets say you think its the alternator. Take a broom stick and put it on the alternator with your ear to the other end. If you hear the same noise youve found your source.

But please be careful to not get it caught up in the rotating parts. Im sure that wouldn't be too fun.

This trick is useful for many things. ****, you can even stick it to the valve covers and here the cams hitting. Its kindve neat.

well I went over to jacks junk yard down the hwy from me and they had a idler in a banged up SHO ... 5 bucks what a steal . I still have a little bit of a whine but not as bad.
