Welding cams tonight

Just thought i would share that i was welding the cams tonight on my car. 120,000 on the clock and its still together. I already have the front 2 cams welded. Now its time to go soak some more shop rags in water and knock out the back 2 cams. I have never worked on one of these V8 SHO's and it took me 50 minutes to get it down to where i could weld the cams. Not too bad i suppose. I can tell you this. The oil smells really bad once you lay down the heat to the cams.

So on that note wish me luck on the back 2 cams.


Edit--- Will have pics posted tomorrow night with the VIN and everything here for reference and i want to take pics before i slap it back together.

Good luck! As long as you know what you're doing in the welding department and keep the slag to a minimum (and out of the engine) you should be fine. Make sure and change the oil right after. Good luck!

Ok all 4 cams are now welded. I think i did a pretty good job of keeping any slag out of the motor. Was not really all that hard. It looked harder to do then it actually was. The oil smells very sweet once the welder hits it and gets it hot.

does anyone know what gaskets are re-useable on this motor? I really really dont want to have to re-use any but the ford dealer cannot get them to me tomorrow and i have to have the car back on the road tomorrow.

You can re-use all of the gaskets you took off the cam weld. As long as they are not damaged and the surge tank ones are not bent. And it is a fairly simple job of the cams if you are good with a welder. Welcome aboard, and you just saved your cars life and will not become a statistic down the road. Congrats!

I kinda figured i would have to re-use the gaskiets anyway. Now I just need to find out the best technique to delete these secondaries.

Meant to update this. This was all finished up on saturday. I deleted the secondaries as well. She pulls nice and hard after 3400!!!

lol There is a kid down here with like a 98 or 99 sable with the duratec in it that has a really loud fart can on it. i cant wait to pull up beside him. I gave him a little taste of the SHO a few minutes ago as he was behind me.

Looks like you stick welded it, has anyone successfully mig weld or arc welded the cams?

I'm afraid of the spatter and burn through.

This was done with a Mig welder. Miller Millermatic 130. The pics make it look funny.

Wow, I don't think I've ever heard someone doing it with a MIG before. Did you have any splash?
