This is certainly not my area of specialty, but IIRC, the overdrive is an electronically actuated system that uses relays. From my ancient EE background, what you are describing could be a relay problem. Past that, I am afraid I can be of little help, other than to note that if it is in fact a relay that is going wonky, someone that knows the electronics on these transmissions might be able to point you at one or two of them that are the likely culprits and replacing them will be much cheaper than a transmission rebuild. I hope, anyway.

Please keep us informed as you learn more.

Ach!!!! That is a ... MUSTANG!

Well, to each his own. :) I had one long ago. Got a '79 turbo new in the fall of '78. Ran great for about 3 years, but it really never met a ditch it did not like during our Nova Scotia winters. The throttle was just too touchy. I was off the road at least once each year. Toward the end of its third year just about everything seemed to be starting to go wrong with it, so I traded it for the '81 Scircocco, which I kept for a very long time and in fact sold just yesterday, for a truely amazing amount of money getting pretty close to what I paid for it new, and that is with over 475,000 on the clock. And it never wanted to go ditch diving. ;)

So, though I would not get a 'Stang again (the trunk is too small for all my junk these days, and those doors into the back seat are really handy for the dogs and such), I do hope you have a great time with your new toy. :)
