Hello all, through a friend of mine, I ended up helping one of HIS friends with a problem hes having with his 93... IT runs poorly and seems to always be missing, but yet it gets progressively worse once its hot... When it gets hot, it sounds like a Horrendous detonation, that gets progressively worse, and eventually the car dies. I ran the codes with the car off, came up with:
157 (Maf range LOW)
158 (Maf range high)
117 (Ect sensor low or grounded)
All of these were stored codes, nothing fresh, that seemed to check out 111, (all systems clear)...

With the engine running, I did that test, and came up with:
116 (ECT Out of range)
411 (Idle speed system too high)
129 No map or MAF change during goose test
167 NO TPS change in goose test
Keep in mind, the car crapped out right after the codes began to display, (idle lopey and then just died..)

NOW, my question is this.. I put a knowingly good MAF in the car, and the running condition didnt change... I was originally thinking it may be the CCRM, however in searching that, saw that it doesnt seem to control the actual run functions of the car, does it?
Another thing is, the car tends to run very hot, and sometimes overheat, although the fans do go on eventually... THe kid said he took the thermo out last year, which I dont think is helping things either...
Sorry for the long rant, I'm just trying to get it running good for him, and I'm really thinking it has to be something electrical, and simple. I posted the codes because I know sometimes a group of them coming up like that can mean a certain sensor.
Thanks in advance to all for any input, I'd liek to get this kid out of my hair! :bonk:

By the way that it sounds it might be the ECT that is bad so i would test it. Or if you have a good one on hand i would switch them to see if it works.

well, as luck would have it, this thing seems to have a BADDDDD noise when it gets hot.. (I mentioned it was a POS didnt I?) It sounds like there is NO oil pressure when it gets hot, only below 1K RPMs, although it runs perfect before that, aside from the miss.
The ECT I THOUGHT was the sensor on the bottom of the airbox, is that correct? If not, someone please enlighten me, I''m having a brainfart currently... I'm thinking this car has some serious problems outside of the missfire and codes... IT sounds like its rapping when it gets hot, but I only heard it over the phone... I have to go take another look at it tomorrow, and see if I can at least narrow down where its coming from.. I think it could be some serious detonation is the misfiring is that bad...

The ECT is the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor.
AHH, I had forgotten that.. Where is that located, by the thermo housing, ofr on the top of the radiator? Or somewhere completely off from that?? :bonk:

But a thermo stat back in the car. I've heard that the coolant flows to quickly without one it in for the coolant cool properly when traveling through the radiator...

all those voltages to low or to high sound like a bad ground to the body of the car or from the body to the block. I seem to remember someone's 3.2 swapped car here (not mine) run like crap and constantly seem to overheat. It turns out that there was a ground problem and that made the sensors read wrong, sounds similar to your maf codes and ECT codes. Might want to check and clean all the grounds for the engine, computer, and battery, just to make sure.

ECT sensor replaced... Still doing the noise.. When this thing gets hot, it sounds like its detonating, but ready to expllode.. I havent heard it in person yet, (do the ticking that is), because it only does it when it gets hot.. I waited an hour or so the other day, and it wasnt hot enough from idling/checking codes, etc... Any thoughts? I'l definitely let him know about checknig all the grounds, etc.. but this thing consistently does this when it gets hot...

UPDATE: This 93 ATX has now become a parts car, lol... It now is running on 4 maybe 5 cylinders at one time, and when it gets hot, it RAPPSSSSS and has a oil light on solid... Another one bites the dust... Oh, and just to add to the pain, its a rare green one...
