Water Pump

Today driving to work the water pump went on me. It's a 93 3.2L I'm going to attempt to replace it myself. What does it involve to do this job and is there anything else I should replace while I'm doing this? Are there any guides available for this?

Not a terrible job. I'd recommend changing the CPS and timing belt while you're in there. Maybe the serpentine belt and cam/crank seals as well.

Make sure it is the pump.
They usually give you lots of warning by leaking out the weep hole with enough volume to shut down your crank position sensor (CPS). Get a dentist's mirror to confirm the weep hole leak. I have never witnessed an impeller seperating from the shaft, which is quoted a lot at service centers.

Oh, it's leaking! think big clouds of white smoke and enough coolant on the belt to make the power steering pump slip. My mechanic put pressurizer on rad and coolant sprayed out of the pump. you can also feel a distinct wiggle in the bearing. Thanks for the suggestions! :thankyou:

Help!

So, I got a water pump. (it's in a CARDONE box 57-1458) It looks like it will fit but it's missing the threaded hole where the belt tentioner mounts to. Is this normal? Wrong pump? Is it ok to put the tentioner back on with only 2 out of 3 bolts?

Second Question: The lower timing belt cover on my car is missing. I'll likely be driving it this winter. (Southwestern Ontario) Should I be trying to find one of these? What are the risks of the timing belt skipping? Or is it going to **** the CPS sensor? at least it would be easy to change!

I don't remember for sure on an ATX, but I think that belt tensioner bolt goes through the hole in the water pump and threads into something behind it (rear water pump housing?). In other words, it's not supposed to thread into the actual water pump housing.

I recommend installing the lower timing cover.

Well, after looking around on the intertubes, It appears that my 3.2 engine has a 3.0 water pump and tentioner on it? This car has been changed to MTX. Would that have anything to do with it?

I'm confused :S

If you are running the MTX 2 belt setup, you need a 3.0 pump.

Do you have one accessory belt or two? ATX = 1 belt, MTX = 2 belts

The 3.0 and 3.2 water pumps are in fact different. If you look on RockAuto or Advance Auto Parts, etc. you can see the difference.

There is 2 belts. talked with the former owner. It is a 3.2 engine but all the belts and pulleys are from 3.0. I need to get a 3.0 pump. thanks for your help K-Dawg, Area 91!

You could get crap in the timing belt, the timing belt may degrade faster, CPS may fail sooner. Some people don't use them, but I feel like they're there for a reason.

I'm going to order another water pump. Any suggestions on which one to get from rockauto? PRONTO is cheap.... Anybody try one of those?

I've never used anything but Cardone, but for that cheap, the Pronto is worth a shot.

Assuming it's the same as my 93, There should be an o-ring. It will fit into a groove on water pump. You should replace the one that is on the pipe as well. Any hydraulics shop should be able to find o-rings to fit.

Like the above post states, there is an o-ring. It's included in Fel-Pro ES70425. The water pump o-ring is the thin one. The larger ones are for the crossover tube.

I once tried to find one of these o-rings at the local parts stores and couldn't find an exact match. Didn't try a hydraulic shop.
