Well, shot peening has gone good for me for now. I recently dynoed just to find out what the tranny is going through and its been taking quite a beating and lots of torque. I hope I don't jinx myself :frown: .

I'm not saying that shot peening process is the answer, just wondering why it hasn't broken yet. I abuse it daily and haven't held back on flooring it. But have not been to the 1/4 mile track (for fear) of not making it to the convention.

P.s. damn, wish I could tell you the torque #'s but Tim is watching this!

Cryo did nothing for me. Time to see if this shot-peened trans will fare better. Gonna turn up the boost at the convention so I can finally beat Tony!! (may even have to power shift, *gasp*)

Tim when you race a new Zo6 from a dead stop and beat it by two cars and your tranny doesn't break.....then you can be deemed King SHO.

Okay so I call the so called only company(Metal Improvement company in california) in the US that deals with Laser Peening and here is what I was told. They said laser peeing is a a better way to stengthen metal parts and is 3-5 times stronger then shot peening but they are only dealing with large coperations and racing teams and havent perfected doing gears and shafts yet. They said it will cost a lot more probably 10x more to laser peen right now due to having to make custom jigs a software to work the gears in the laser machine. In about a year they will be done with the reasearch that is being funded and pushed by a couple main vehicle maunfacturers and it will get cheaper for average joes to get theirs done.
So Laser peeinig is out of the question for now but Shot Peening and the Billet Gearset are still in play.

The engine is almost done and and I am still pondering on doing my heads with a medium port job, gasket matched intake opeings to match my ported manifold and 1mm oversized valves on the intake and exhaust to help the boost go in quicker and exhaust evacuate faster. When the SHOBros get the next set of headers done I will be buying them to really open it up.

Now will some XPZ cams from SHOBros be needed or will the stock 3.0L cams be good enough?

First, if you use the stock MTX cams your power will not be nearly as great at RPMs above 5500.

Second, IMHO it isn't the actual strength of the gears that is the problem but the "flex" of the input shaft. It flexs away from the gear cluster and since 3rd gear is in the center of the cluster it gets less gear to gear contact. Hince, all of the power is riding on less and less as the power increases.

That's why some are shot peening the gears... To increase the amount of abuse the gear itself can take when you're riding on the edges of the teeth.

and I guess that does help some, but the problem still exist.

BTW, I’ve toyed with the idea of making up a “stronger” input shaft.

Have you tried heat treating it before, or anyone else?

I really want a good fix for the input shaft because I don't want to have to pull my brand new painted, quaifed, etc tranny I've too much time and money sunk into it to short change the project now. What gears are problematic? Is it just the 3rd gear shaft that needs extra strength? I might as well just get the billet 3rd gear shaft and get the rest shot peened.

I plan on abusing the **** outta this car and I don't want to swap any more tranny's after this project is finished. The engine is being built to handle high boost and the suspension/brakes/chassis are built to go right with it. I wish Ford would've put this engine in a differnt car with a better tranny.

3rd gear does not have a shaft separate to itself. The shaft that has the biggest problem with flexing is the input shaft itself (the one that comes from the clutch disk and runs into the transmission). If you have a custom billet one made, let us know.

When the input shaft starts to flex, 3rd gear (which sits pretty much in the center) starts to ride on the edges of its teeth which eventually shear off.

I agreed, however, I'm not going to pay $6k for gears when I can get a tranny for $90 or less here at the junk yard (and there is four MTX SHO's in the JY I frequent right now).

Now I'd be interested in that. I think that's all that is really needed...

So, does anyone even have one of the $6k gear sets..?

And does anyone have any idea on how much a new input shaft would be..?

I think "Lupo" has a HD gearset

He does and Josh. I think there's someone else out there with one, but I don't know who.

I dont remember how many Josh originally had made, I want to say six or seven. But I thought I read somewhere at one time that he sold all but one.

If they are all sold then I guess Shot peening is the route 4 me. BTW, can you shot peen reman'd axle shafts to strenghten them up more? I have a pair sitting in their boxes an I really don't want shell out $1000 for heavy duty axles.
