Just wanted to thank the earlier posts touching on this problem.

VIOLENT dash board shake (like an inch peak-to-peak) between exactly 74 and 81 MPH - none under, none over. Found that after I replaced my rather tired rear tires (sorry for that) - miracle of miracles... dash is steady as can be at all speeds.

For the months it had been happening (I rarely get out of the city and on he freeways, so it wasn't really a bother), I would have sworn it was front end, most likely involving the subframe bushings, which are still factory.

Kinda of amazing that amount of shaking would come from what seemed the complete opposite end of the car and really only affect the dash board - the car itself never really felt like it was shaking.

I've now learned that just because it's front wheel drive doesn't mean the rears aren't doing something too. Just wanted to pass it on.

- Cheers

I think this says something about how our dash boards are affixed to the car- I couldn't get the dash to budge in my Rabbit or my mom's Bonneville... Soon as I get a single snowflake in my slicers the whole bloody dash looks like it will come bounding off...

could be a number of things...
tires out of balance
bad tires all together...
warped rotors...
bad halfshafts...

could it be anything to do with how the dash is mounted?

My dash does not shake or vibrate. However it does squeek over bumpy, rough roads and shakes a lil then. Is there a solution to this?

Mine used to do the same thing. When I switch rims (and tires) I noticed that it stopped almost completely. Dont know if it was my front or rears, but I always suspected that they werent balanced right, or were now out of balance after much use.

These dashes were designed for cushy SLO suspensions. The SHO is more harsh and thus shakes the dash (and makes older cd players skip).

I'm sure you could take the whole dash out and reinforce it...that would be the only solution. (you can also use the center console as extra support).

I've thought about doing just this but it's a huge undertaking.

Maybe this can be an upgrade during a heater core replacement??? I'm always trying to find ways to stop the rattleing, shaking, and cd skipping on both of my cars!

You are rite. The dash on my dads car is not that bad to make the CD player skip, but each time i go over a heavier bump, there is this squeeking noise that seems to come from the dash. It litterally sounds like there is lil mice in my dash or something. However, when I put my finger in between the top of the center console and where the bottom of the dash where they meet, the squeeking stops. I was thinking of putting something in there permanantly in the spring.

At the shop we call this 'dum dum'

Its like Play D'oh but stiffer a bit , and black.

slam a little chunk where the loose is , rescrew or reclip the part , and noises begone. Holds for years.

The real trick is to find the EXACLY where the loose is. Works for plastic crackings also.

Its pretty hard to find where it is loose, especially without the removal of the dash. Im sure if one of the clips, or whatever it is that holds the dash, is loose or cracked, they probably all are.

It's not just your shop, it's what the product is called... dum-dum putty. It's a hacker's best friend!

A better solution is replacing bad or worn clips and using teflon, foam, or felt tape where applicable. Dum-dum putty can get soft with heat and move out of place or not hold under stress when used in certain applications.

Reason dash shakes is lack of lower support. Problem solved by mounting a steel bar between dash's steel frame and floor where the center console slides under the dash. No more dash shaking even with bad tires. Worked on my 93 Sable, and 95 SHO.
