Well, just talked to the people at the shop and they are saying they are pretty confident that she will be done by Thursday afternoon. Sounds like a Christmas present. :)

So am I. The shop has been doing the photography. I have only even stopped by to look once every 2 weeks or so. Total time now looking to be just a day or so short of 6 weeks.

Got her back yesterday afternoon. They did a remarkable job. The SHO looks like from the factory. Amazing what a good restoration house and a blank cheque will do. :) There are a couple of minor things that I need to take her back to them to look at on Tuesday, and as expected, it did work its way just into 5 figures, but they put in a huge amount of new metal and I am pleased with the results. Tossed her around a couple of curves harder than I have for some time and she is back to very stiff again. It had gotten to the point that enough was gone that I could feel the body flexing. Its going to be sunny today, so I should take some photos. Not like she will be this clean and perfect again. And now I am back to that state of suspense where one waits for the first scratch...

Oh, they are making up a disk for me of photos taken during the job, which I hope to pick up Tuesday also. I will dump them to PhotoBucket and post an address.

Oh, its not a big deal. The idea, once deciding to keep an eastern car more than a decade on rather than junk her and move to something else, was to do it right and get the full structure of the car back to as new or better, not just the paint. Though the paint was not cheap either. Parts and paint came to $2700 and there was another $7900 in labour. So, $10.6K total, and right about where I figured it would end up, with the initial estimate at $8k before they got into how much metal would end up needing to be replaced. I will have to look into what I can do now to get her registered as a 'collector' car here in BC. I think she might qualify under low numbers made for year of manufacture.

Ford for 96-99 purchased a Schuller press to stamp out the entire side (A post B post and rear inner quarter. Very stiff and sound body indeed. Yet to repair the rockers or quarter panel can be involved because of the layers of metal.
I worked at a resto shop back in 91. The guy specialized in 280 z datsuns. (They changed to nissan to get away from the (rust out) datsun was known for. Anyway I asked the customer who came in to pick up his 72 280 z how he liked it? He said he liked it but couldnt understand why the price went from 2500 to 6500.
Time and labor.
Sounds like you got a very nice job (restoration really) Not alot of Collision Centers will do extensive work like that. Most are strictly production shops running on cycle times.

Yes, it is a serious restoration shop rather than a standard body shop doing crash damage work for the provincial insurance branch. They have gotten a very solid reputation in the old car community, which is an amazingly big thing here on Vancouver Island. Just about every town big enough to see if you blink when driving through hosts a Show & Shine event during the summer sometime here on the Island, and the old car people are really serious about their cars. I suspect I will start plugging into that group with the SHO, now that the restoration is done. Further down the road it will become a Sunday drive only car, as I expect in a few years to downsize for my daily drive to a coupe again. This is the only sedan I have ever owned. The trick is going to be finding a coupe that is fun to toss about but also has a big enough trunk for all my sailing gear.

Still waiting for them to burn me the DVD of the photos of the in progress. I took a few of the end state myself, but have not taken them off the camera yet. I suppose next week I should rattle their cage about the DVD, though, or it might take forever. Thanks for the reminder! :)

Next time I'm visiting my parents (Duncan, BC), I'd love to come take a look at this. My dad has a SHO too, I'm sure he'd like it as well.

Can't wait to see some photos.

Appreciated, though I did not mind people looking at the site and seeing it all. I think there were 2 other shots there of the SHO, one of the cold air intake and the other of the gauge cluster. Plus, of course, great pictures of my boats. :)

Looks great! Enjoy!!!

Here are some pic's of a DIY paint job done in 20 days in the meantime. Not a SHO, but still pretty cool.

I read that link to the end. It was quite good. I have to deal with my peeling clear coat in the spring and I hope my car comes out as well as that dudes Sirocco. If your thinking of painting it yourself, this is a entertaining read.

Slightly off-topic, but I have pics on slides back at home (in AZ now) of my black '89, after all the paint and bodywork, at the '96 SHO Convention. Hafta drag those out and scan 'em one of these days!
