Well, my SHO is 2 weeks into a pretty total body rebuild and dropping by Little Valley Restorations today she is very taken apart. New metal going in all over the place to replace things rusted out or just starting to rust as a result of her first half of her life as an East Coast car. They appear to being an excellent job and managed to find interesting structural parts from Ford Vintage Parts which has saved some time and money in fabricating them. Another couple of weeks, I suspect.

Good point. Pictures to come. They are photoing everything as they go, but have not handed over the files for the shots yet. When it is over and I have the before, during, and after, I will put up some stuff.

Just excited that it is underway, after having been thinking about dropping the hammer and doing it for some time. :)

Tough audience. ;)

Mine did not look like there was much rust at all until I took off the plastic lower quarter panel covers. Then it was a matter of working up from there through the rot. Though there was some obvious rust starting on the edges of the wheel wells. But this is a common thing with Eastern cars. There is a cam sprocket dead 1996 Gen III on a lot about 6 miles from here and on a medium level inspection it looks almost rust free. I considered buying the body for parts, but first it is a smoker car, and those are hard to use anything from the inside from, and second, the owner owns a garage and is thinking about rebuilding the engine, so reluctant to sell at any reasonable price. But it has apparently been a West coast car all its life, and it shows no obvious rust at all. ~100k miles on the clock if I remember right.

Does it look like this?

That was my first CSVT.

The one below is my 2nd. I found its cheaper to buy a clean one then having it redone.

Very nice. I can't wait to see the results. Its been many years since I seen this car! I think I still have a picture of it somewhere when I seen it in Halifax back in 2000

Cost to respray from a quality collision center is an easy 3000 grand +. Then if you do a color change wow! Materials alone wether PPG, Dupont chromabase system(good stuff covers well, good match) Sikkens etc. Jan 11 most paints are going up 5% Now shops are switching to waterbourne, still uses solvents but need alot more air movement to dry it. I heard the shines not there like basecoat clearcoat.
*Dukeofsho is right cheaper to find a clean one then to redo*.
If your a collision expert then you have to by one that either has body issues only so you can address the issues, or mechanical . Not both or you'll be spending $$$$ Been there done that when I restored my 89 10 yrs ago:banghd: Fun though car (still on the road) I sold it in 04 with 192k
Remeber plenty of us are mechanics, few bodymen, and fewer trans rebuilders. Choose your SHO's wisely.
Pixar pics were cool though.

That's not bad. The repaint on my '89 back in '96 was $3,000 for a Spies Hecker base+clearcoat. That was apart from the bodywork I had done while it was there. About $6K out-the-door IIRC.

I did want a quality black paint job, though. A few shops weren't even interested.

I am in a similar situation to Ron's. I wanted a quality paint job, and there are only a couple of places that were interested. There was a huge amount of metal restore work to be done, and not many could do that well either. I expect it to be in the high 4 figures by the time it is done, but it will be excellent and as Ron notes, also clear coated again after the base. Total time is going to end up being about 5 weeks, from the current state of affairs.

Mine was done all in PPG products then wet sanded and buffed. When the smoke cleared it was expensive.

Wow!! I've seen many paint jobs. But from a production shop its all about cycle time. My Dads friend has a 60's something vette that was painted , block sanded with 600 grit then sprayed again, then buffed labor intense like stephen said. The results on dukeofsho's is show quality. Sadly when its show quality your paranoid of the (haters, jealous people) who cant afford, let alone appreciate a nice refinish that scratch it. Or worse yet if your worried like me someone running into you ,and the insurance company is like oh its not worth fixing we'll total it. (I'm thinking of putting full coverage on my 97 SHO) Of course you can argue that and win. Without a salvage title. Got paid 2300.00 for my 96 Saab turbo (payed 700.00 for the car) needed a clutch when I got it. Got it running and bam rearended right rear. Frame pull, bodywork and a complete paint including jambs around 600+ not including labor. Glad I took autobody in vo-tech and stuck with it.

Yes, this is true. I was very paranoid. After paint it spent more time in the garage then driving. At one of the csvt meets I mentioned I was going to sell it. 1.5 weeks later I was given an offer I couldn't refuse.
I contacted the Guy who bought it a year later. His girlfriend took a key to it. After having it repaired he lost it on a turn.
This time around I found a super clean body with a bad engine. I went straight to having fun modifying the
engine, trans and suspension.
