It's been a while since I've peeped in around here. I guess that's a good thing considering my car has been reliable... well somewhat reliable. Unfortunately I'm running into multiple problems now that need addressing.

Here is a little background info. I have a 93 MTX with 136k miles. I did my last maintenance with plugs, wires, gaskets, belts, lash, water pump, cps, tps, and performance y-pipe, to name a few about 45k miles ago. I used all motorcraft parts.

My engine performance parts include the following, k&n filter/ outer airbox removed, BBB's, pp ypipe w cats, shoshop 2.5" catback, port matched head intake openings, extrude honed intake runners, and shoshop stage II cams.

My problems are listed below.

First of all.... no codes..... KOER,KOEO,Cylinder Balance Test. I drive 55 miles a day mostly highway and still get around 415 miles a tank before I'm starting to cut it close.

1. VAPS - has given up the goat. Steering is always loosey goosey. It came back once last week, but went away again. I ran some diagnostic tests and was able to verify that the actuator was loosening/tightening the steering during the first portion of the diagnostic test, however the actuator wasn't moving during the sweep portion of the test.

2. My cruise control is not functioning. It worked everytime I tried it up until this morning. I admit I never use it unless testing. It worked last week when I was trying to diagnose the culprit. It would not activate this morning.

3. My car has problems coming down to idle when you disengage the tranny while moving. It will stall sometimes.. .more often when the ac is on. The revs don't stay up liek they should. THis has always been a problem, but seems to have gotten worse. It used to never do it with the ac off. THis morning it was doing it with the a/c off. Idle reset has never solved this problem. Strangely enough it seemed to be working last week in terms of holding the revs up until you stop, but it has since stopped working.

4. I'm failing emissions due to 3x the allowed HC level. I believe the graph shows me having higher than normal levels of HC and CO at idle and while cruising. I have noticed a misfire in my car when I start it up when it's real damp and has been raining. Last night I noticed a plug wire who's boot was a bit messed up with the wire exposed. I think this may be part of the problem here. I am also showing what I believe is higher than normal levels of hc/co/co2 during decel. If the VSS is bad, this might explain this part of my emissions.

I am leaning towards my VSS or speed sensor giving up. I think it has a hand in most of my problems. I also think the plug wire is starting to cause problems. I'm going to pull the plug on that cylinder and see what it looks like. For $20 I'm going to do the VSS as well. Anyone have suggestions?

agreed-VSS problem most definettly. i have heard others say that the VSS has not popped a code when it was indeed the cause.

well... it turns out I plugged something else in to the vaps computer port. What are the odds of something with all those pins having the same connector? It's all up under the dash so I wasn't paying attention to the box's physical differences. I looked at the box and it was indeed the wrong module. I plugged the other one back in and everything came back. For some reason I have VAPS again.

I did a half over (my woman came home and made me leave) of my car yesterday. I noticed quite a buildup on the front valve cover. I think some of it may have come from the intake manifold maybe loosening up some. There was a concentration of sludge looking buildup where the front surge plenum meets the throttle body end. The breather tube that goes from the front valve cover to the throttle body was hurt and may have also been leaking some.

I pulled all 3 plugs up front and they looked good. Good for 45k plugs I guess. The plug wire silicone is cracked on #6 where it meets the top of the boot. I'm guessing this is my problem down low where I'm probably slightly missing and failing emissions. I expected to notice a difference on that plug since the wire was messed up some but it wasn't the case. I think it's hard to tell because my idle is lopey from cams anyways. Would I gain anything by pulling any of the rears?

I think my vapor recovery system may also be hurting. The piece of vacuum line that goes from the manifold to the valve is pretty dry rotted. I have noticed gas fumes on warm days while running. I don't have a lot of pressure in the tank when I fill up, so it's not plugged. I wonder if it may be open to the world and cause emissions problems.

Is idle not supposed to drop to 1k or under until you stop moving? If that's the case, then something is probably funky with my speed sensor. I've seen it keep the revs sometimes, but most of the time it doesn't. Is it supposed to hold revs all the time before you stop? I think this could be part of my stalling when pushing the clutch in issue.

I still ordered a speed sensor. While I was at it, I ordered cam and knock sensors to boot.

they should be testing your gas cap before doing the etest...
do an intake cleaning, and fuel injector cleaner and have the car nice and warm before the next etest.

the idle stays near 1200 more or less while near a stop, then at stop it will drop to 700 or so.
