They are required now I believe, from what I understand everyone has to get those at $25 a pop to pump some money into the system. There was discussion on here at some point in 2010.
What? I thought that idea got shelved, we have to get those fugly ass plates?

Dammit.

Yeah, unfortunately when you go to re-new your registration, you will be required to hand over the old plates.

This is such a cash grab, it's ******* ********.

Albany mismanages the state into financial ruin, and then they come up with shit like this to steal more money from us, which will only be mismanaged some other way, and never benefit anyone but the pockets of another corrupt and poorly managed agency (I'm looking at you, MTA).

So mad right now, this totally ruined my night.

*edit*
Sorry for the political tirade, carry on...

No you wont. You can renew your current plates for no fee.

What is the plate fee, and do I have to pay it?

You will not be required to get new Empire Gold plates and pay a plate fee when you renew. You can renew and keep your current plates.

If you need a new plate, or you choose to get new Empire Gold plates, you will pay a plate fee.

I renewed a couple online a few days ago. They were vanity plates and were the same old outrageous price. Hmmmmmm

Those plates would look great on a 1930s to 1955 cars.

Look the new plates over carefully, there could be an embedded chip that transmits your information.
Quebec has an "enhanced" licence that can replace a passport at a border crossing. It emitts a signal identifying who you are long before you talk to the customs agent.

about plates: I just renewed my registration and there is still an option to keep your old plates. As for fees and all that: I read that DMV fees pretty much double now, taxes are prettty much the same. They probably will do the same thing they did back when we had liberty plates. Pay to use them and then eventully they would say no, you can't have these any more, pay for new plates. NY is , I think , the only state, that make everyone's life harder, especially with driving. NOw they came up with driver's assesment crap. Even if youre out of state and got 5 points, you have to pay all that crap.
I think I'm gonna get my plates and DL in Connecticut. Would be able to get nice custom plates with nice colors, registration and inspection for couple of years, tint windows 35% with no problems, and much more loyal cops to deal with.

Hey Kirk... yeah, I wasn't too keen on the 3rd one either, I was just thinking out loud. I wanted something a bit cryptic, most people don't know spooling refers to a turbo. NYBLOWS2X probably wouldn't go over well with the DMV. They scrutinize a plate combo that even hints at something risque, you need to provide an explanation for something that gets flagged. I remember years ago, I saw a plate that was BF DEAL. That probably wouldn't pass nowadays.

that reminds me of south park episode:The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs, where nothing made sense, but everyone tried to make sense out of nothing.
I have bmw cabrio and I used to have EU plate in the front that also said TOPLESS, untill my mechanic took it for a ride few times and gave me the car back without it.
