When doing your valve lash adjustment you need to measure how far out of spec your valves are and replace the shim with a shim of the correct size to get it back to spec.

So basically, you won't know what size shim you need until you measure.

I have the specs at home. I can PM them to you later (around midnight) or a search should pull them up. I'm sure it's been discussed on the forum before.

Before you can order new valve shims, you must 1) measure the existing clearance. If it is out of spec, then you: 2) remove the old shim and read what thickness it is. 3) calculate what thickness is needed to bring it into nominal spec, and obtain a new shim either by buying a new one or swapping with one removed from another valve location. That's why the valve adjustment goes much faster if you rent a shim kit. There is a spreadsheet that will do the calculations, I think it is in the How-to section.

This might help: WorkSheet

The specs are at the bottom.

You can not get new shims anymore from Ford. The only place you can get them new are a Yamaha dealership but they cost $5 each. It really doesn't matter if you use new or old shims.

It can be more cost effect to get a shim kit like here: Shim Kit

Correction.

You cannot get some size shims from your dealership. Of the 52 shim sizes that were made, there are only five (5) I couldn't find the last time I searched. However, the shims are not readily available, so if your dealership service department doesn't utilize the various parts-sourcing databases, you're going to hear, ". . . the shims have all been discontinued, are now obsolete, so I can't get them. :blah:"

Additionally, of the 15-18 sizes you're most likely to need, two are very hard to find (2.600mm and 2.625mm), most only a handful remain (ie. 4-20), but a few (2.500mm, 2.525mm, 2.650mm, and 2.675mm) are available in large numbers (175-to-300 or more).

I'm sure this was stated before but, since the subject is open, what shims would you ask for at a yamaha (motorcycle/ATV?) dealer? Is it a certan Dia. type question or is it an application(make/model/yr) type question ?

Thanks for explaining this again!

I just collected the shims out of my '93. Are the buckets worth anything?
