I'm not really sure how they can re-manufacture a PCM, and verify that everything is working properly.

Exactly. I tried getting an X2J from RCM but tired of waiting a week and half with no PCM and no responses to my questions if they'd even sent it off. At least they refunded my money promptly. Shosource only has ATX PCMs in stock so my only choice after searching the board for a used one was to purchase through Rock Auto. At least this one has a one year warranty on it and I can always get my money back if the next PCM is also defective. And by defective I'm talking about throwing out codes I've never seen before and that shouldn't be there.

Installed the replacement PCM from Rockauto. Not getting any spark. Fuel pump primes and has gas in the rail but no signal getting to the coils. What's the procedure to test the DIS module? I want to figure out if the wiring to it is at fault. No codes and the CEL turns off when cranking.

Got is started but this one is also tossing me out a code 18. Seems whatever program they are using to inspect these PCMs, it's not taking up for timing. Also starting is difficult. Crank sensor is brand new and so is the cam sensor.

Even with the old PCM in place, I'm still getting a code 18. Where do I start to look? Never mind. It's a loose wire in the DIS connector. Car is running fine now.

Wow, glad you got it running finally. What a pain in the ass run of trial and error on that one. I hate diagnosing crap like that and wind up throwing parts at the car because it's often easier to swap out a DIS, coil pack, etc. than it is to sit down, read the instructions for diagnosis, try all these tests (which are trial and error), etc.

It's running but there's still a slight intake pop as before. Found an X2J and it'll be here tomorrow so we'll see how it goes. Also going to change out the coil connector as well. There might be some arching over at it that's causing the wrong cylinders to fire.

The X2J gave me two codes that the other PCMs didn't. A 157 and a 542. The 157 is the MAF but where would be a place to look for the 542? It says there's an open circuit to ground from the fuel pump to the PCM. I got it, the 542 is a junk code from stalling it when adjusting the throttle screw. No problem but the MAF is the issue and probably has been all along.

157 won't go away with cleaning the MAF so a replacement is needed. One other thing is two spark plugs blew. And by that, the insulators were spinning freely in the bodies allowing air to enter and escape the combustion chambers. Could hear and feel the rush of air on the wire boots themselves and probably a big reason why they were all white and the car was running lean.

Same thing happened on my Probe except it was an NGK plug and the one's in this car were Autolites. Never experienced this sort of thing up until recently and with two different brands in two different cars.

Just to let everyone know, a replacement Motorcraft MAF solved the intake pop. Cleaning the old MAF didn't solve anything because it was bad.

The only replacement MAFs I can recommend are OEM Ford.
