So I just pick up 4 Kumho Ecsta ASX's for $100, 75% tread. 7.5-8.0/32nd

I have been told NOT to buy used tires, but damn, it was such a sweet deal and I just need my car back on the road, plus with that much tread left, wow, I couldn't pass them up :)

What is your take on used tires? Are they worth the money for the 12-18mo you get out of them?

If they're 75% tread, as long as they're 75% or less than new cost (including mounting, balancing, etc) then it's a good deal. I don't get the problem with used tires.

The only problems I have with them, is when they have been repaired. Then I wont touch them.

The tires where new about a year ago. Sitting for about 2 weeks.

These had a little shoulder wear on 2. Probably came off a lexusIS or something similar. they have become the rear tires set. she is perfectly aligned, so thats not a problem at all. I dont race it, so I don't need insane cornering ability.

Daily driver, no spirited driving unless I'm dropping it into 3rd on the freeway. I just go with the flow on the surface streets, well, unless everyone one is going 10 over.

I've put on new tires that balance like crap, even the good brand tires have bad apples here and there..., On a brand new cheap pos I spent 20 minutes trying to balance it, re positioned the tire on the wheel about 6 times until I got it good

I've heard from tire dealer magazines that once a tire begins to wear unevenly, even if you go put it on a properly aligned, different vehicle... it will still follow that wear pattern... its not like it will wear down the higher spots until its even with the lower spot and go from there... the tread now has a different shape

so keep that in mind when purchasing used tires....

I used to think buying used tires what cheap and trashy....until I did it a couple of times and holy ****, I saved a ton of money and couldn't tell the difference. Example....my old TL needed tires...Michelin MXV4 Energy tires were on it and I wanted to go with the same tires. New they would have cost me over $600 for all 4. I got on Ebay and bought 2 tires at about 80% tread and 2 at 90% tread. I paid a little over $200 for them. I paid $60 to have them mounted/balanced. So basically I got 80 and 90% tread tires for 1/2 the price.

The car rode alot better, like they were new tires and I ended up totaling that car not too long after that, so it all worked out. My 01 TL needs the same tires soon and you bet I'll be doing the same exact thing.

Well, the rears tilt in at the top slightly, and I put the worn shoulders outward there.

not a noticeable tilt, you have to look really hard while im driving and hit a bump...

but that offset is enough to make sure it will wear the rest of the tread nicely.

I've had good luck w/ buying used tires, as long as they are brand name tires.

i honestly can't remember the last time i had a matched set of new tires on my car. $50 a pair, mounted and balanced at a local tire shop for mine. works out pretty good, cuz they're cheap enough for me to not really give a damn about em.

I run used tires all the time..... but I do know a guy that deals in used tires and I just can't bring myself to pay retail now. I just mounted my front 2 track tires yesterday.... Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions. I already had a full set of these when he came across the almost new pair, I just had to buy them for when I needed them, $50 for the pair, how could I pass that up.

Of course I'm running the track tomorrow, so I have already told him to be watching for me another set.
