Hi all,

I have a 1994 Taurus SHO ATX and have a question concerning the amount of deflection of the timing belt. How much tension should the timing belt have on it?

I understand it utilizes a gas cylinder to set tension but should I be able to move the timing belt up or down at all between the cam sprockets (when the engine is not running)? If so, how much movement is acceptable?

Finally, if my timing belt tensioner is bad, are there any remaining new units still for sale?

Thank you VERY much for any and all help! Thank you SHOforum!

The tension of the span between the two camshaft sprockets depends upon the position of the crankshaft. Always rotating the crankshaft in the clockwise direction, with the first, yellow index mark on the damper aligned with the "0" (zero) mark on the timing tab on the lower timing belt cover, the belt tension is very high and the belt should feel more like a tightly strung guitar string. When the second, white mark on the damper aligns with the "0" (zero) mark on the timing tab, the belt tension is relaxed as the many camshaft lobes are pressed by the valve springs to exert no rotational force on the pulleys. The top span of the belt under this condition can allow about 1/8" up or down movement with a firm finger.
