I freely admit being mechanically dis-inclined, but after completing both the upper and lower 60k, I am attempting to remedy my oil pan leaks. BUT, that said, I can't for the life of me find the upper starter bolt for removal?!?!?!? Can anyone tell me where to look (I know, on the upper side of the starter), like which side of the engine is the bolt head on, etc.?

Thanks in advance!!!

The bolt head is on the passenger side. It is tucked between the starter and the engine. You can reach it with a long long extension from the wheel well on the passenger side, looking through an opening between the plastic splash guard and the subframe. I think you can also get to it from above (I think).

Not to step on Tom's toes, but I have changed my starter 5 times (rebuilt ones...) and the upper bolt is on the drivers side not the passengers side. IIRC it is a long bolt that bolts through the tranny. Look behind the PS cooler and you should see it. Also, IIRC it is a stud with two nuts on it, one frozen and one obviously that moves.

Yeah the ground wire goes on there you have to remove the nut then the wire then remove the stud with a deep socket. IIRC 15mm.

That's right! You have to hold the 15mm with an open-end and then use a 13mm socket to loosen the bolt holding the ground.

FYI, the last time I changed the starter I moved the ground wire to the lower bolt, so that the top one isn't such a pain. Has been working fine like that for the past year.

:hail:

You're right guys. I had a senior moment. I'm thinking of the two outside bellhousing bolts. In the words of the younger generation, "my bad".

Thanks for the quick replies. The starter is out now, along with about 3 lbs. of gunk & grime all over it!!! Both the nut and the bolt/stud on mine were 13mm. Once I cleaned off some of the grime I could see them both easier. Time for a power wash after the oil leaks are plugged!!!

if you can place some plastic around some of the electricol componets/connectors above the tranny because the SHO is very water shy and make sure the engine is atleast warm, some people prefer running then if you have any water related problems the enginebay is warm and it will evaporate faster.
