So, after last year's valve adjustment, new injectors, and new computer, I dropped the car off to have the decades old gas smell checked out. I did notice fluid stains on top of the tank last month, and I didn't have time to work on it.
The shop did a smoke test and smoke came from the top of the tank, but the actual emissions system seemed ok. They dropped the tank and found a pinhole on top. They also found the fuel pump base was rusted and was unlikely to seal on a replacement tank.
Fortunately I had bought an 18 Gallon tank off Van Oss years ago, and that tested fine.
Now the car is back together.
First impressions -
Significantly smoother in the 2k to 3500 RPM range than before with the old tank.
I used to have a semi-dead spot which got better after all the parts last year, but now it is impreceptible.
I'm glad I had the tank, as the shop couldn't source one.
