UNABLE TO SHIFT GEARS

'93 5-SPEED WITH SHIFT ROD SETUP- With engine running and clutch down, shifter will not go into any gear selection. with engine off, shifter will go into any selection with clutch either down or up. There is no tranny noise apparent to me. This problem happened all of a sudden when I when to start engine and engage 1st gear-would not engage. Shifter does not move into any selection with engine running. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thank you!

Unless the clutch cable is broken the clutch is gone. Does it grind when you try to go into reverse? If so then I would say that it is probably your clutch. If not then I would check other possibilities.

thanks for guick reply Munkee- as to reverse, the shifter does not move into any selection with the engine running including reverse. I checked the clutch cable and it seems to move the lever that goes into the tranny. at this time I am unable to check the connection of the shift rod to the tranny end with its bolt and clip parts. Might this be a possibility that something in that area came loose or off?? The shifter itself seems to be tight and not excessivly loose.
