you really only have 2 options Gear head G3 turbos, or ATP. each will require tuning.

Id go for the gearheads. The atp ones cost more and will probably break a stock short block.

the GH turbos are more than the stock block can handle and are a direct replacement.

GH Gen3 - true compressor and turbine machine and upgrade. Bigger than stock with billet compressor wheel. Stock like spool. More than enough to rod stock block.

Cr - only compressor machine and upgrade

ATP - bigger than both previous. Machined compressor and turbine housing. Cast wheels and can support higher power. Unnecessarily large for stock block. Some spool delay.

My opinion I wouldn't touch any of them but the gen3 gh turbos. Best of both worlds on response and upgrade.

So kinda power bump would one see over the stock turbos if everything else is kept the same? So for ex, someone with a 91 tune, kinda bump in power would one see compared to the stock turbos?

this would be like putting bigger **** on an ugly chick.... I think you would want the supporting mods but I can't say for sure. the stock system will carry 17 psi but I don't know if flow would be a restriction on the big end of the RPM band. this is where the bigger turbos shine.

I rebuilt mine with the CR compressor wheels. I wasn't really expecting much, if any power gains but I was pleasantly surprised. If you don't want to completely replace the turbos, I'd definitely recommend going that route

LMAO dang man, what you got against ugly ducklings lol jk.
Ok lemme put it a different way, lets say you go with a tune package, 3 bar, plugs, 170 tstat AND lets add catted DPs. Now how much would upgrading turbos net me vs the stockers?

Just a guess 450whp problem is nobody has done it that I know of. Back to the intake flow restrictions most have done the epp intake when they get to that point

Kinda whp would one make on the regular turbos with that setup?

On e30 just over 400. Fyi all the above numbers are e30 if you only have 93 your bigger turbos are useless

If all you have is 93 just a tune will get you 350 375 whp
yea i was gonna go with the 93 tune package and add catted DPs as well. Wanted to see if down the road my turbos went, how much of a power bump id be able to get with the upgraded turbos vs the stockers

With those mods and depending on who you use for a tune, I'd expect at a minimum, around 350whp with 91 on stock turbos and closer to 400whp on 91 with aftermarket turbos. That number can greatly increase on 93 and even more so with E30.

Here's GearHeads dyno with the mods you're interested in, but 93 stock turbos, then 93 and E30 on his upgraded turbos.

oh wow so that basically answers my question. Looks like a 50 whp increase vs a stock turbo. Thanks for the graph

Yeah it's a somewhat tricky question since there's different ways and combinations of mods that achieve different results. With the right fuel you can get more than 400 whp tune-only, whereas you might not make that on 91 octane even with full bolt-ons. It appears the GH turbos are good for about 10% more airflow but that's just a guess.
