Curious if anyone else has heard a strange high pitch gurgling sound coming from their turbo. The only time I hear it is when I'm building boost and next to a highway divider or on a bridge close to the wall. I've looked around on the web and have only seen a couple people talking about this oddity , but they were on diesels. If it's any help, my car has been doing some funky overheating stuff as of recent. The first time it happened I was downtown New Orleans and I heard the caution tone and when looked down the water temp symbol was displayed and the gauge was pegged hot. No issue, just pulled over and shut the car off. Started back up after about 30 seconds and the temp was normal. Then today while sitting at a drive through the same thing happened, only this time I happened to be staring at my cluster when it happened. No gradual temp rise or anything, just went from normal to overheat in the blink of an eye, with the symbol lit up and the tone. shut it down and sure enough steam coming from the engine. Popped the hood and saw a ton of pressure coming from somewhere on the left side of the engine (looking from the front). I couldn't quite tell where it was coming from, to hot to reach in, But it appeared to not be coming from the actual radiator hose. After a couple of minutes I slowly opened the reservoir and saw it had been depleted. Let the car cool down, added new coolant and she's up and running like normal. I'm not sure what the deal is, but that's when I started worrying about the gurgle sound from the turbo. Haven't checked my oil for coolant yet, but will after this post. I'm not super knowledgeable with turbo's but that sound can't be normal. Any help is appreciated.

TIA

Yeah. Do not run the engine unless you want to destroy it. Very likely the water pump is toast.

And how are you defining HOT vs NORMAL? With an OBD scanner or the coolant temp gauge in the instrument cluster? The gauge is an "idiot gauge". You may even see an overheat code set in the PCM. Check to see what else it might be storing.

Do Not Drive. Tow it and get a rental in the meantime.

Another possibility is the fans just crapped out, fingers crossed that is all it is.

With the a/c on your fan should be running. Gurgle is most likely boiling coolant, nothing to do with the turbo unless a turbo coolant line is leaking. Temp sensors aren't reliable once the coolant has dropped to the point where the sensor is no longer in flowing coolant. The quickest way to jack up an aluminum head engine is to overheat it and warp things, take the advice above and don't be driving it until you get the coolant/overheat issue corrected.

I appreciate the info guys. It's not a very loud and might just be my overactive imagination. After topping it off it's running fine, at least for short drives, which is all I really do with that car. The high temp I was referencing was off the Idiot gauge. I have a code reader and I'll be running a scan to see what it pulls. To be honest my wife just want's to run the car until it dies and go get a new one, although I'd like to keep it as a project car. Chances are there are some very bad things going on under the surface, and I'm just not sure I'm willing or able to invest in the repairs that no doubt need to be done. I haven't seen any leaks under the car after it sits, be it oil or coolant so maybe it was a freak incident. It was almost 100 degrees yesterday and I was running the a/c at the time of overheat. The fans are working just fine, I checked that after it happened. I'm running the 87 octane tune I got from LMS so I know it's not running too hot of a tune right now. The dash temp gauge stays a couple notches below half way almost always so I'm pretty sure the water pump is working. Still scratching my head on this one, but if it happens again it might be time to take her in for a diagnosis.

Did you have any coolant smell? Any smoke out the exhaust? Those would be the telltale signs of water pump issues. Yeah, it could be the turbo coolant lines too, you just may be the exception to the rule. Oil feed lines leak - that is known. Coolant lines - trying to remember ANY incidents and failing LOL.

Keep an eye on the engine oil. Coolant will mix directly into the oil if the water pump fails.

No smoke, but yes the interior smells like antifreeze. Today it overheated again and I was fortunate enough to see where it's coming from. I'll upload a picture if I can, but it's what ever that part is that connects the reservoir feed line to the upper radiator hose. It's a plastic piece so I think it's just old and has a hairline crack that I can't see unless there's pressure on the system. Gonna see if I can figure out a part number and go pick one up.

Can't find that component on Fords website. It show's me hoses, but no that union piece. I'm sure if I take it to them they'll be able to figure it out, but it seems like an easy enough part to change myself and avoid the overpriced dealer charge.

After digging a little more, it appears the upper radiator hose is all one assembly. Gonna see if anyone has it locally.

Is the digital temp gauge on the cluster an actual gauge that moves with temperature? Or is it a dummy-gauge that only changes between "normal" and "you're screwed"? Anyone ever seen the gauge at 75%? Or does it just jump from 50% to 100% when too hot? Mine is always right around the 50% mark.

I guess we should keep in mind that ANY plastic fittings esp on hoses on the SHO are subject to failure. So far, typically it has been on the turbo-related hoses, now we can add cooling system hoses :D

Yeah, I'm glad it's just a hose as well. Getting it repaired at the moment and doing a full system flush. Hopefully they don't find anything else.
