I am currently building a tube chassis mid engine two seater, using the SHO engine and transmission placed in the rear with the driveshaft disconnected. Any reason why this will not work? If so, why not? What do I need to be on the lookout for?

I posted on the forum quite a while back about this idea.
You will likely want to delete the PTU or at least empty the main gears out of it.

It would work fine. Would just need to source an axel for where the ptu is normally. As the ptu has the mid axel. Not sure if a straight axe will work in your build. May need to have a cv joint like an IRS diff carrier.
May be best to remove the gears from a ptu and the rear output and maybe 3d print or laser cut a high temp cover.
Or try to get info on the transmission used on the Ford GT but not sure if the back of the engine is the same on a gen 2.

While I have the engine on the stand, I am doing valve cover gaskets and plugs. What else should I do while I have easy access?

How many miles on your engine? Replace waterpump and timing gear while you have easy access depending on mileage? Walnut blast the back of the intake valves and intake ports in the heads?! You could port match the exhaust manifolds to match the inlet on the turbos. There is a significant difference in diameter between the outlet on the manifolds and inlet on the turbos. Probably the 2nd greatest restriction to exhaust flow coming in after the stock turbine wheel.

So much easier out of the car. All the timing set stuff, H2O pump, I would also do any seals you don't want to tackle later. Not sure how easy front and rear seals will be in a tube chassis. The Taurus gets very cramped. I would also (depending on access later) do something like crank sensor... 100K is generally the tipping point where you might want to do preventive stuff like some sensors that are hard to reach in a vehicle.

You would have to install 2013 or later cast exhaust manifolds to be able to port. I don't think you can port the 2010 - 2012 exhaust manifolds. Easy to check the condition of the intake runners and valves to decide if they need cleaning with the intake off. :)

Some updates on the project. Ordered and received all my parts. Started to put the chassis together. Designed and built custom hub brackets and motor mounts. Getting ready to start adjustable control arms and suspension.
